It was suggested early on that only pax who had booked a package holiday would be rescued and that those who booked flight only would have to make their own arrangements to return. Is this correct?

I think the decision as to whether keep operating under administration is due to the administrator is it not. This usually happens when there is a realistic chance of the operation being sold or funded to continue as a going concern. IS MAEL operating under administration?

Again this only highlights the free ride enjoyed by airlines at the expense of their pilots. Starting with a six-figure handout for training costs of every pilot entering the industry. Plus VAT of course. It's then vanishingly rare to share in profits when things go well but first out the door and last to be paid when they don't.

Sensibly, any Monarch passenger will be repatriated over the next two weeks. The only difference will be whether ATOL/credit card company/insurance picks up the bill.

Very sad day for aviation, been there before and got the T-shirt, unfortunately I had an ATP type rating not an Airbus, they shouldn't be out of work long and shouldn't need to resort to air.

To all and any Monarch staff still reading this thread, can I offer you my sincere and heartfelt sympathies. The next few weeks and months will be pretty difficult, but please don't suffer in silence. You have a fantastic set of skills, and they are valuable and transferable.

Having flown with Monarch around 120 times in the past 2 years, I can honestly say their staff were the best in the business - especially compared to my flights with Ryanair, easyJet and BA. I'd often pay more to fly Monarch rather than take a cheaper flight with easyJet, sad now to not have that choice.

If you are presently in the UK and live abroad, the CAA are not interested in getting you home.
Only once had an operator go under but I was lucky and well placed to deal with it.
When I left the RAF: 50 applications, two interviews, one offer. I believe things are better now.
Only advice I'd give and I apologise if 'teaching granny' etc:
New airline = new SOP. Just do it their way and and don't be a wenwe.

Very sad news - I work for a competitor UK airline but flew with Monarch regularly.
They have had a long history, were an excellent airline and I wish all employees all the very best, whatever the future holds in store.

If there is so much demand from so many would-be passengers, and the infrastructure (aircraft and staff) exists, why doesn't 'somebody' come forward and take over the operation?
Or is it a case of 'How to make a small fortune in aviation' ?

I'd like to add my thanks to Monarch staff too, from my first flight in 1986 on a 757 to my last one 15 August on a A321, that would have been superseded this afternoon on ZB974. I'm sorry to see Monarch go, I too would pay more to fly with them, a good number of extra legroom seats, good inflight service and great crew. I hope all Monarch staff soon find new jobs. Thanks for your hospitality over the years.

I only flew with Monarch once and it was years ago on an A330 from Newcastle (I think) to Cuba. From what I can remember it was a great flight with fantastic crew. Sad day for UK aviation and would like to wish all those Monarch staff all the best for the future.
I'm curious, flights booked directly with MON after 14th December 2016 are not ATOL protected. So why were flights before then protected? Did Monarch Airlines Ltd. hold their own ATOL certificate separate to the holidays branch?

I don't understand how these things work so therefore I can't understand why the powers that be have hired a load of Qatar aircraft when there are lots of Monarch aircraft sitting on the ground, along with the crews, who are perfectly capable of going and fetching the stranded passengers. Why pay Qatar to fly all the way here and then all the way back instead of giving the money to Monarch and thence their creditors and using Monarch to do the job?
Unless of course the AOC has been pulled as well but that should be just a paper exercise for the CAA.
