Monarch airline may be close to collapse
Ministers are braced for the possibility of a British airline collapsing over the coming days, The Times has learnt. Cross departmental meetings have been held in Whitehall to draw up contingency plans in case Monarch Airlines is grounded immediately. One source said that talks had been held in Cobra, the emergency government briefing room.
Monarch, the fifth biggest British-based carrier, has refused to comment on speculation that it may fold. The airline, which expects to carry a total of about six million passengers this year from Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Gatwick and Luton, has admitted that it is undertaking a “comprehensive review” of its operations. This is believed to involve talks with airlines such as Easyjet and Wizzair to take over its short-haul business.
If the airline failed that could leave British holidaymakers stranded across Europe and many EU citizens could also be marooned in the UK..........

I wonder where this story has been cobbled together from? I'd guess from the stuff put on this thread and probably threads on other sites that I don't frequent like Airliners.net.

Even by some drama it didn't, it should hardly force a collapse of the airline?
The DM quoted 100,0000 customers abroad but only 10,000 were apparently package holidays. Although how reliable their source is, who knows.

ATNotts....Whilst it is understandable you might frame in this way bearing in mind MON are one of BHX`s largest operators you really really need to face some facts..
Firstly although probably v annoying for you & others (notwithstanding the employees of course of course) it is not posters on here that are causing the problems... would you not agree that Greybull themselves have no little part in this fiasco...it is now twice in a year that they have taken MON to the brink sullied the reputation & name & worried endlessly their staff..
Is there a requirement to take "talks" down to the wire every year now...do other operators use this same process?..
HM Government have a duty of care at the very least to protect interests of citizens stranded abroad...do you honestly believe that the possible stranding of many tens of thousands of citizens abroad would not be game planned by Government & agencies....
The brinkmanship evidently going on behind the scenes & obviously in some cases to drive acquisition prices down is business but unedifying to innocents involved.
It appears quite apparent that all this is not yet another figment of some ones imagination as you appear to suggest...how many clues at the moment do you choose to disregard?..There does also exist tho some pretty hard reality parked..
BTW you should read across all platforms & then disseminate the info yourself that`s what worldly observers should probably do...

Firstly, I come to this not from a "BHX Fan-Boy" angle; I would express the same opinions which ever the airline, it is people's jobs, families and mortgages that are being effectively discussed here.
Second, I'm no fan of these private equity companies either, they buy companies, with the sole aim to increase their market value, normally by reducing costs (= staff and salaries) then flogging them on. Boots the Chemists is another example of this.
What I find galling is the frivolous tittle tattle, most without any foundation. Anyone with real information and concrete knowledge should have more common sense than to post in forums like this. However this tittle tattle just worries the willies out of staff members, perhaps some we planning a big purchase this weekend, just signed up for a new mortgage or whatever, then read some of this. How will they sleep tonight?

But isn't this very forum not a RUmour NEtwork? If you don't like what's rumoured, don't read. Rumours by their very nature are either accurate... or inaccurate, to varying degrees.
I will be very sad to see Monarch go, if that is it's fate. But sadly, older companies than MON have disappeared - way of the world unfortunately. I wish all employees well.

Disruptive as it would be, the collapse of an airline (apart from perhaps BA) would not constitute the kind of emergency situation to prompt a meeting of COBRA. I also suspect that HMG (especially the Foreign Office) wouldn't see it as their job to sort the mess out, in part because they don't have the resources or capacity to do so.

People should accept this is a place for people to chat give speculation and different thoughts on all matters concerning aviation people shouldn't fear posting what they want to write just in case they get the sharp end of someone tongue you don't have to agree with posts by others but please respect their right to comment on all things aviation

First to ATNotts - I am not employed by Monarch
Secondly what I fail to understand regarding the current Monarch 'problem' is that a similar scenario happened this very time last year. The press speculation at the time centred very much upon the fact that Monarch had failed to appease the regulator in terms of the requisite financial standing to enter into the 2016/17 ATOL which at the time required a larger sum due to the fact that both holidays and some flights were ATOL protected.
Subsequently the regulator agreed that ATOL protection was not required (due to the Monarch Group financial standing) for flight only sales.
A 14 day extension was granted by the regulator for Greybull/Monarch to come up with the necessary financial proof. Shortly thereafter the Monarch CEO made a statement which, amongst other matters, provided two salient comments. Firstly that he would not allow the renewal to be a last minute thing (ie 30/09) and secondly he readily admitted that Monarch bookings had taken a severe knock particularly over the two week period of early October 2016.
Obviously the ATOL effects holiday purchases only however the public probably do not relate to this fact ....all they read is Monarch licence in jeopardy and the press reflect this fact in their releases/comments.
What I fail to understand therefore is why oh why do Greybull/Monarch CEO allow matters to get into this state and basically shoot themselves in the foot?
