MON made a small profit excluding the write off of the fleet change. Their ATOL bill is very low this year in comparison to last year so thats not the issue either i wouldn't think. MON made a small profit... Jet2 made a larger one.

The main issue surrounding monarch is its future, in particular its what grey bull considers to be an acceptable timeframe for 'results' - hence why they have enlisted KPMG consultants according to the news.

i reckon it looks more likely that grey bull and KPMG will consider moulding the airline into a saleable entity is far more worth their while (and much quicker) than bothering to actually try and make a sustained go of things (profit) for the next 10 years or more.

thats the only reason i mentioned Jet2, its the only airline conceivable to bother with buying the company. Jet2 are already about to launch their own ground handling so why would they not look at a company that will soon operate the same fleet... have an established network (slots in LGW like gold dust) and dedicated boeing engineering.

i can't really see a partnership though...cant understand how it would work at all other than giving each other far too much capacity within each companies shared bases

all of this is total speculation - more food for thought really. I have no ties to the airline and really wish them the best having flown with them a few times. but their ever changing direction is fascinating and makes you wonder more about how these venture capitalists actually make their money

Jet2 have had their own ground handling operation for nearly 12 months now, they also have dedicated hangars at Leeds and Manchester. The only thing that Jet2 would want is the 737MAX order. The most (and until recently only) profitable part of Monarch is the engineering business. Greybull have been rumoured to buy Atitech to create a large maintenance business.

Unfortunately I think that the only way forward is for Monarch to be split up.

easyJet will buy the slots at LGW & LTN.
737MAX order will go to LS

Maintenance to be merged with Atitech to form a larger business which can be sold off.

Although I have heard similar things, Its not a done deal - LS is in the running to get the bulk. LGW is open to a wider audience of airlines - so I wouldn't bet on EZY getting all slots there - there are others who would be interested.

It all makes very interesting reading. What I believe to have read that it is Monarch Airlines that is on the table. Be it a tie up or merge or supply or take over. Monarch Aircraft Engineering is a total separate business to the airline and from what I have read on this subject believe it to be the airline potentially changing hands. (speculation)

A huge hangar here in BHX with the capacity to take very large aircraft, mainly filled with small regionals, I wouldn't imagine is going to be attractive to Easy or Jet2. The complication of taking on an airline and the associated engineering with all their contracts, around 6 or so at BHX and maybe as many again at MAN and LGW, on types that neither operate isn't going to float the boat of companies that do not do 3rd party maintenance and are not showing any signs of wanting to do so. Therefore I think the engineering would be a stand alone MRO, such as Storm or Apple.

With regards to the airline tie up, the complication of mergers and tie in's transfer of staff and TUPE is an absolute minefield. It breads discontent, an attitude of this isn't how we used to do it, etc etc. I truely hope that going forward, whatever happens that the news comes sooner rather than later, the annual circus is not fun. We have good crews who deserve to have stability, and we have good engineers with lots of experience especially on the regional aircraft and the B737/B787 family which is the main bread and butter at the moment.

Do monarch not already have some form of tie up on the maintenance side with them?

will the new 737max be able to op into GIB ?

GIB is one of MON's good routes -
the 738 does not go there nor does or can the A321

only Boeing types 732/733 and 734 ever operated there then the 757 and that had an expensive nose wheel prang once G-MONC

apparently Enter Air put a 738 there recently on a charter but it was a one - off

BA/Comair with new 738's have given up trying to get into the new St Helena airport which has similar wind and crosswind issues to GIB and FNC which make the 738 a no go and out of limits for ST Helena

sorry to bang the bleedin obvious drum but why would MON Jeopardise the GIB route with unsuitable new a/c unless it sells it off

The Max-8 is perfectly capable of operating in and out of GIB.

As for this Monarch "shorthaul" sell off, it's completely sad times for the consumer as well as of course for all the staff if and when it is confirmed... At best we can hope for a tie-up rather than a take over and see the Monarch brand and operation continue. I have a feeling we will have to wait until October to see what plans they finally reveal.

Hmm not at all according to the figures I have read - its short field performance is well below that needed at both t/off and landing.

are you privvy to something ?

A short field performance improvement package was done for GOL for the 738 in 2006 to op from Rio's SDU airport but afaik none planned for the Max.

a 737 8MAX at MTOW or MZFW (189-200 pax) at sea level needs around 10000' of runway at 30C temps
and around 8000' at 14C

GIB's runway is 5500' and with a SW wind the crosswind limits will be 15kts for a landing

thats why the A321 does not go there

Didn't GIB Air operate A321s into GIB for a short time ? But with notable restrictions.

Gibraltar has, in the past, played host to A321's and A300's. Both courtesy of the Saudi royal family. C17's and Hercules' were/are also regular visitors, as well as the A400M.

I can't imagine the 738MAX should have too much difficulty... It will be tighter than the A319/A320 and 757, which are best suited to operations out of GIB, but far from impossible I suspect. I doubt Monarch would have ordered them if they had to give up their GIB flights, they're the largest operator!

I may be wrong, but do the MAX's not come with short field package as standard? I know the 739ER does.

why would the operation be at MTOW?

They also operated B757s into GiB until a Captain decided to bend one!

I'm not privy to anything that isn't already available to know. You basically answer your own questions in a few of your comments. The 737 Max-8 isn't the A321 so i wouldn't use that as comparison either.

Again, it will be perfectly fine for the operations in and out of GIB. I know the current Monarch management team come up with some bonkers ideas and plans, but for this one, they knew what they were doing...

Pretty sure TUPE wouldn't apply to crews in the case of a pure merger as being Airbus qualified they aren't qualified on Jet2 Boeings so there's way round TUPE on that front.

If MON was acquired by NOR what would happen to the pilots, in most UK acquisitions the workforce is moved with their present T&C under TUPE rules ....but NOR do not employ pilots directly in the UK it is via an agency OSM . How would this work ?

Norwegian after slots in LGW and some of the 737 orders?
Jet2 after some more of the 737 orders?
engineering business retained separately?
god knows what would happen from a jobs perspective

The 321 can operate into GIB, indeed I've flown it a few times through GIB on ZB flights but the 320 is better suited.

Must have been a while ago then. As a Regular MAN-GIB flyer I've never seen the A321 used on the route except when it has to go to AGP.
