Isn't there also an issue with width as well as length? It can't be made longer without being made wider and then we're back to the church issue again....

Runway restrictions

I dont pretend to know the regulations restricting aircraft usage, but if you look at LCY it started with Dash 7's and gradually chipped away with the regulations with safety cases and trial flights.

30 years on modern aircraft have different performances, with "short packs" etc.

Long gone are the days when the old BOAC had to find a new aircraft i.e. VC10 which were needed to land at "old empire" short runways.
It seems now you make the aircraft fit the runway and not the other way around.

Not an exact science but food for thought.

If I was a large airline with a fleet that was capable of operating in/out most European airports without restriction, I wouldn't be that bothered that I couldn't operate from SEN without buying non fleet standard planes. Perhaps newer models will allow SEN to operate without restrictions but the fact is those restrictions are going nowhere for the foreseeable future.

If the service starts I would think that the airport will be offering a very small line of credit or even paying up front for services.

What about Lux Air who operated two 737-800 charters from SEN to Pau recently fully loaded with 186 pax and luggage? Different engines or is the relatively short distance a factor? Think it might be a good decision by SEN (for now).

Ryanair engines used to be de-rated meaning long runways but I don't know if that is still the case with their latest aircraft.

737-800

My understanding is that landing distance is as much the issue as T/O. The big wing on the '800 gives it a lot of 'float'. Ryanair generally want 2000m minimum.

Perhaps they took advise to go head with invest. That modern aircrafts like NEO, Next generation 737 and C series will change the situation at SEN. Only the Church is main problem after seen one of post comment about it.

Yes, the present runway could be extended physically across Nestuda Way but there would be no point as the church restricts the width and length officially - and quite right too. It would be possible to build a completely new runway across the golf course to the north west but this would be way too expensive as it would involv demolishing buildings or threatening historic Rochford Hall, depending upon its alignment. So SEN is stuck with what it has.

If it that case. Why do they went head despite the problem with it. What the point of it. Perhaps they didn't realise that protest people stopped to have the church demolished. So they have stuck with it.

Tayair: before the runway was extended it could no longer accept fully loaded A319/B737-300 size jets because of changing CAA safety rules.

I waited 40 years for Luton to take off. It helps if you are young when the waiting game begins.

Good points LTNman The first time I went to Luton was in 1973 was tiny with wooden airport just like old SEN Airport. Went there few years ago it is completely different with modern terminal.

The Times Business

I see a newspaper report today on Stobart's growth mentions SEN attempting to bring in Wizz Air.

Could do SEN-Maribor again for example.
