Morning.
Was on board a flight last night Hurghada to Birmingham. The aircraft was a 737 800, registered G-TAWB.
My question is the flight was 6HRS 25MIN due to headwinds, would this be at the aircraft limit for distance travelled? It was at full capacity.

yup - 189 pax and bags SSH-BHX is fairly close to limits - new HGW a/c with winglets have about 5400-5700km range but with a 160 pax
likely your skipper was watching closely whether he had to tech stop somewhere but his routing maybe made it lucky for him with those winds

Very much pushing it I'd say. They occasionally use the 737-800 on UK - BVC routes and have to re-fuel in Faro if the winds aren't right and that is anywhere between a 6 - 6.5 hour flight.

Usually the Hurghada and Sharm are 757's in winter but with the Marrakech suspended until the end of March the 737 has been moved no doubt due to the time of year and the reduced demand.
They also do it on the Thursday Sharm until the Las Palmas starts in Feb
Quite a few tight flights these days the TCX A321 Banjul - BHX had to drop into Las Palmas on Tuesday and of course then missed the BHX closing time.

I did s Marsa alam back to Lgw and we flew for 6.5 hrs, landed with final reserve as we had to divert to ltn. We had a slight head wind but probably nothing compared to what those guys had. We still had space for another two tonnes of fuel. There is plenty of range in the ol girl.

Re the performance of a 737-800 on UK-Cape Verde flights, how better (or worse) does an A321 perform? I see Thomas Cook have used A321s to Cape Verde this winter, but I'm not sure whether they've had to refuel en route.

If they are going in to Sal it should be no problem with over 10000ft of runway, whereas BVC is about 6800ft. TCX only operate to Sal, so it's not a problem.
I spoke with captain on our return from BVC on the 757 and he said BVC - UK on the 737 isn't too hampered by the runway (although a wee bit) due to very favourable headwind on take off, it's more the headwinds at altitude at the time of year that is the problem. He said they could make it quite comfortably otherwise.
I am always amazed at how slow the take off feels in the 757 at BVC, flaps are always a fuller setting than usual and when you rotate you always think 'really, already?'

738 and 321 to cape verde etc
both pushing the envelope to the extreme limit in high density 189 or 220 seats
good old 757 is going to be a hard act to follow for the mid haul IT market which the 757's did so well hand in hand with short haul
Monarch and air europe op'd 757 LGW-BAH with upto 223 pax
never normally had to tech stop westbound to LGW
( on the odd occasion )

Is their 757s doing BHX-SID this summer? Booked to go with them so would be nice for a potentially last trip on one! Remember going EMA-ALC on a Britannia 757 and he took it off like a fighter! Great aircraft.
