Steve Ridgway has made noises today about wanting to combine Virgin with bmi - am inclined to think this is a bit of a PR exercis on the basis that if he wants bmi, he won't need to float 'maybe we will, maybe we won't' stories in the press. Anyone else have an opinion ?

It's a case of "me too" with Virgin. They like to see themselves as a major player (a comment not intended to talk down Virgin's formidable achievements over the years) so if BA say they are interested Virgin has to as well.

I just don't believe it has the cash or management expertise to take on BD.

VS is now seen as an unlikely suitor.

IAG is still the most likely - if any bid is seen by DLH as acceptable for Mainline and its juicy load of slots.

The immediate big question remains over a sale of Regional and the fate of Baby. Both these issues probably are likely to be resolved if management ever manage to make a decision...

If BMI are taken over, what are the implications if those who buy just break it up to the minimum profitable routes and sell slots? Or Fold company altogether and sell of assets? i.e what happens to the pensons especially with the huge deficit it has.

IAG in talks to buy BMI.

Let the infighting begin!!!

BA Owner Tables Offer To Buy BMI From Lufthansa: Airline Discussions At Early Stage | Business | Sky News

Looks like the Bearded one will have to put his PR woolie pullie on again.

Interesting times for both BA and BMI I suppose. Not sure where TUPE agreements stand if the deal went through as the potential buyer is a topco and the airline would not be bought by BA direct.

Good luck.

As Wirbelsturm points out. The potential buyer appears to be IAG, NOT BA!! Of course IAG is not an airline!!! Anybody familiar with these things will see the problems for both groups of employees, and it would not involve any merging of seniority lists!

But surely IAG would eventually merge Bmi into BA, they wouldnt want 2 airlines and 2 brands for the long term....

They want the slots - not the airline.

The value of bmi is in the slots, not the airline itself.

Yep, this is true and you need to operate those slots with aircraft. They require pilots, cabin crew etc. so work it out. All this talk about merging/not merging of seniority is a 'bit previous' as they say but look at how it's been done in recent times and that'll give us a fair idea of what might happen. Maybe bmi will become the British version of Iberia Express as BA might target its loss-making shorthaul operation over the coming years? It's very early days folks and none of us really know what's being thrashed out behind closed doors at the highest level. One thing I know for certain is that Lufthansa are definitely planning on a sale and it will be expeditious.

G-AWZK

There is a very long way to go on any deal with BA, the problems are enormous, not necessarily insurmountable, but very complex unless BA really wants the headache of a joint seniority list? no thought not and why would they, unless they can come up with some way of ring fencing the crews and aircraft it could be a right dogs dinner!! for a start the EU will not allow BA in any take over to walk all over bmi crews and say guess what fellas your on year one.

I'm not sure there is anything new here other than BA making any offer.

I to have also heard that DLH have serious interest for both Regional & bmibaby, no idea who

Lets hope this mess is over by Xmas for all concerned

The deal would be with IAG - not British Airways.

The seniority lists may not even be an issue. Until there is an announcement in the Telegraph followed a couple of days later by a denial from WPS will we know for sure.

As for Baby's buyer, I'll bet you do know more..
