Surely if BMI pull of the MME/LHR route the jet agreement would be null and void.

Wasn't the reason Eastern pulled off the LCY-NCL route was the doubling of landing fees at LCY, to try and encourage larger aircraft at LCY?

Couple of other bits of information, Thomson have added 2 more weekly flights to Reus and Mahon for Summer 2008, and there is a Cruise charter to Barbados in December 2008.

Eastern won't go to LCY, as has already been said, they pulled off the NCL-LCY route because of the increased landing fees at LCY.

VLM could make a success of LCY though, GSM could do LGW or even STN, but it doesn't fit their business model so that won't happen, other than that the only possibility I can see is Ryanair from STN, but Ryanair don't have many, if any, domestic routes from Stansted do they?

On another sad note looks like we've lost Spanair next summer. God help us.

GSM

'....GSM could do LGW or even STN, but it doesn't fit their business model so that won't happen....'

Perhaps, but it hasn't stopped them trying something new from DTV before, i.e Jersey. They used to fly GLA-STN but they were competing directley with EZY and indirectley with FR, BD and BA. At least at MME they would hae a monopoly.

EASTERN

Landing charges were the official reason, but in reality the flights were operating with as little as 3 pax on board.

At the moment it looks like no Spanair next year due to MyTravel not offering Alicante, Ibiza and Palma next summer (which Spanair fly for them).

Thomson as said earlier have increased from 4 flights per week to 6, 3 with Thomsonfly and the other 3 with Air Europa. At the moment First Choice are still offering Paphos so we'll have to see what comes of that (of course operated by TOM based aircraft this summer).

Also the Goldtrail flights to Bodrum and Dalaman operated by Onur Air will start on 6th March next summer instead of May.

In a further attempt to lighten the situation, the Thomsonfly pull-out should bring a lot more variety to our summer charters, hopefully we'll see Futura back, we already know we're getting Air Europa back.

Tour operators will just get alternative carriers to fly the flights, we may not get back up to full strength for two-three years, but I can't see it being as bad as everyone thinks. I still believe XL could base an aircraft.

The TOM flights we do still have next year could be operated by B752s as well.

Excel just seem to be contracting at the moment - HUY and CWL bases have gone, NCL is seeing reductions too

In reply to an earlier post on FRA using DTVA because of low operating costs, the main reason that FRA use the airport is due to its ideal location smack bang in the centre of the 3 air defence stations that are situated up and down the east coast, which are it's main customers.

Also, the CAA relocated their flight calibration unit from Stansted to DTVA in the mid 90's which made it an easy acquisition logistically into the FRA group, hence FRA and FPL being at DTVA.

DTVA is usually a very nice place to work from but the lack of ATCO's and the knock on effect of not being able to stay open when we need them is an almighty pain in the ar** leading to some unhappy crews, unhappy FRA management and unhappy FRA customers.

Checker,

Guessing by the name you're part of FPL...let's just hope that the lack of ATCOs isn't reflecting badly on ATC side of things as it's just as frustrating, if not moreso for us than the customers. Never very nice hearing snide comments on the r/t when announcing a 30 minute closure (never FPL or FRA who make those comments, but "professional" airline pilots ).

Hopefully it will get better in the next 12 months, with one more coming upto validation on radar to give another "full" controller, two more tower only controllers to step into the radar training slot in turn, and rumours of a potential tower only arrival in the future.

I'd love to have a positive outlook but it does get difficult at times.

Are Eastern pulling off MME-BRU from the end of the summer? Flights don't seem to be on sale for November but the SOU-BRU and MME-ABZ routes are.

I've had a brief play around with the Eastern booking engine, they're offering the full normal schedule in June 2008 but that appears to be it, all months before that seem to be Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only. Weird.

HD,

Nice to hear that you'll soon have more bods looking out onto what is probably one of the best views from any UK tower, but will they stay?

I've heard on the old grape vine that DTVA controllers are the lowest paid in the country and so people qualify and then go off to pastures new with more money?

It will be a very sad day if/when bmi pull off the LHR route. It is their longest served route from LHR and everyone has grown up with MME having a link to LHR.

I can remember going there as a kid and watching BMA Viscounts doing the JER flights at weekends and the DC9s on the LHR route.

Does anyone else remember British Midland B737-200s at MME in the late 80s too? There was EI-BTR in full 'BM' colours as well as a white one with 'BM' tail and titles. If anyone has any photos of this other aircraft it'd be great to see them as there seems to be no photos of it anywhere on the net. It may have been leased from TEA.

Moving forward, I think the best replacement for the London link would have to be in the form of VLM with a MME-LCY service with their F50 or better still, BAe 146.
