There's not enough room in the basement for all the admin staff. Sure it's used by Catering companies, stores etc. Don't see why they should bother moving from the old terminal for now. The old terminal has big rooms that are used for training purposes etc and a lot of the top floor is occupied

It seems there's room for offices in the basement floor of the new terminal building.
Oh right, interesting, can't imagine there would be much natural daylight down there wonder how much SIPTU will extract from the DAA for that!

There's absolutely no need to demolish the old terminal to make room for car parking. Not when there's a multi-storey, which is rarely occupied above the 1st floor and the existing 2 long-terms have loads of capacity left.
The eventual plan is supposed to be to extend the airside area over that way, but that requires growth to return for several years.

My comment about natural daylight was tongue-in-cheek, but not too far from the truth! I do remember EI ground staff at DUB refusing to work in Area 14 check-in area for some reason. Think it was to do with a modesty panel of some sort?
I'm not saying that the old terminal does need to be demolished because the space is required, but insurance, rates, electricity, maintenance etc all mount up. It would be great to see it turned into a conference venue or some other commercial use, but I don't see that happening.
I was under the impression that the expansion would create a pier towards the cargo ramp, byond the current gate 8?

That's the long term plan Brian but the immediate issue is the cost of providing an energy inefficient airport terminal to house a relatively small number of staff. As you said lighting, heating, insurance are all costly items. One wonders why this issue wasn't dealt with in 2006.

It's supposed to go northwards first over the cargo area then southwards over the old terminal.
Realistically, this is a long time away. IIRC The northwards extension was supposed to be started when passenger numbers went over 4 million and southwards at 5.5 million. Projections for passenger growth when the plan was drawn up saw 4 million this year and we can see we are a long way short of that.
Still, it's probably best not to build something on the site of the old terminal that ends up being demolished after 15 years.
In terms of passenger focussed developments, the only thing really needed in the short term at the airport is an improvement in the facilities for coaches, as they currently clog up the passenger drop off area. For that, you could just take a bit of the long-term car park in front of the old terminal as it's never even close to full.

I don't think the took the amount of private car park spaces that have emerged into account when designing the car parks. The short-term has also the makings of a White elephant as three of the 5 floors are always empty. They should allow free parking for 1st 20 mins as it would tempt motorists in there.

Re-location of the Cargo area - replaced by a new Pier**
*When passenger numbers exceed 5m (Our until the DAA's debt situation is addressed)

Nothing has come to Cork from the routes conferences that wouldn't have come anyway. Aerlingus, Ryanair and Aer Arann all have their headquarters in Ireland so there's no need to fly to Dubai or any other Routes conference to meet them. They're the only carriers that have made any serious attempt to grow business at Cork in recent years with the exception of Wizzair.

Cork traffic
Passenger traffic for September more or less in line with 2011 figure. Yearly total also very similar so it looks as if it's bottoming out just around the 2.4m Mark where it's been since 2010.

You got to hand it to Shannon, despite having less than half the population of the greater Cork area, it manages to have multiple services to the US yet Cork can`t manage even 1 service
