CEO bmi just announced that bmi aircraft dispatched to Mahon first thing this morning to help retrieve XL pax.
bmi have also made their 'spare aircraft' available to the CAA to help.
Also stated that bmi, bmibaby & bmi regional will do whatever they can to help.
This is great news, but I suspect there may be something else to it ...

If PB ex FE with VS and EAC is reading this. Drop me a line. I might be able to get you an interview. Flew XL on a ski trip last winter. You were good. Best of luck to you all.

It's probably called Public Relations. Spend money to get people home (at not too large a fee) and they will think of you next time they want to travel. Carriers have been doing this for years.

Very sad day for people at XL and also all the support staff who will be feeling this just as hard... Hope everyone lands on their feet.. Never flown with XL but had a few laughs during my walk around with some of their pilots as my plane was parked at the gate next te one of theirs...
Again, sad day...
Again, sad day...
Alt Flaps,
Just some more info
At 6.30 this morning a bmi Airbus A320, with 156 seats left Heathrow bound for Mahon (Minorca) to repatriate stranded holidaymakers. bmi has also made a service back-up aircraft and crews available to the CAA on a round the clock basis to assist with rescue flights for the next two weeks.
Isn't that the sort of thing that would happen, at a time like this?

The KM flight from BHX operating for XL today cancelled I gather it will mean no more Air Malta charter at bhx. So you feel the air malta crews based at bhx will be out of work also. Very sad times for all concerned

My heartfelt thanks to all XL staff, for the magnificent way you have handled my association with you.
Do not despair, you will be a credit to whoever has the nous to employ you in the future.
Good luck and good hunting.

Sky News have brought a guy called Martin into the studio, in his wheelchair, to interview him live about the mess that XL pax have been left in.
I feel really bad for the guy as it's not easy for him and his carers to book hols, and he was looking forward to it, but I think that Sky News have really stooped to a new low here..........

I agree luvly jubbly. I have been ferreting around all morning, rearranging my travel plans and have managed to do it.
All the time, my thoughts have been with those souls who are now unemployed, though my money has gone (I can ill afford it) and no hope of recovery, my plight is nothing compared to theirs.

I don't need to share their bona fides - they were right.
I have tons of sympathy with everyone at XL, I hope everyone comes out of this okay - and that applies to the passengers too, not easy for them either.

'Looks like the CAA fund will not be enough to cover this collapse.
Great - up go those ATPL Exam charges, medical fees, licence issue fees, etc etc.'
wrong! - the ATOL protection funds are made up from bonds placed by the tour operators or a £1 per pax collected fee - not at all linked to the caa charges for other services.

There are real people in this story !
Genuine commiserations to all ex-XL employees, I'm not a pilot but close to the fraternity and working down the Tech chain looking after your engines.
The issues here are many and complex but you cant help feeling that whilst middle east biilionaires splash cash on their latest footballing hobby it sits uncomfortably that hard working pilots and airline staff are wondering how to pay their mortgages.
(I watched nearly 6000 Rover workers go through the pain)
You done nothing wrong folks and you were a great airline - please take forward the confidence that your capabilities will shine through.
Good luck to each and every one of you and your dependants ; try to stay calm and hopefully it will work out ok !
