Gatwick Airport
Can anybody tell us what big climbing frame is they are building at the enterance of the South Terminal.
The last couple of weeks the traffic has been really bad for dropping passengers of at the south terminal with traffic queued back onto the M23. Good to see some BAA Staff directing traffic this week on the South Terminal Ramp. Think they need to be there permenatly to stop cars parking on the top.
Thanks

Crew transport driver told me it would cost 1.2 million pounds!! and that when complete it will be lifted and turned across the road.......which explains....................
Stand by for major traffic disruption if it does not move cleanly and quickly.

The whole thing is a complete waste of money which provides no value add whatsoever for any user of Gatwick Airport. It signifies everything that is bad about bloated "organisations" like BAA. It has certainly made airport access more difficult.

The Welcome Arch move takes place on the evening/night of 22 September. Some disruption inevitable but Gatwick's moved bridges before - the 2,000 tonne Pier 6 bridge was moved without a hitch.

The arch may be being funded by advertisers but then it sends the wrong signal to the likes of ppruners and aviation people that it's all about style and not substance.
BAA should focus on reducing operational costs. All their users bar none are struggling and even the locos have issued profits warnings. BAA Management attention should be focused on aeronautic deliverables.

So now we have to also cope with people looking at signs as well as trying to find which lane to get in.
Spent most of morning cueing up on M23 to get of for the Airport junction. Things look really great.

The arch is now in its final position. It is only advertising Duty Frees at the airport. It is obvious that it is being paid for by BAA. So much for advertisers paying for it freely. The thing is a monstrosity and is causing traffic chaos. A complete waste of money. A much better use of that sort of money would have been to put in more carry-on baggage secreening machines so that the horrendous queues could be cut. But thinking about it since when has BAA cared about customers and queueing standards?

I think you'll find the Duty Free adverts are temporary - the real deal has only recently been concluded and the copy wasn't ready for last night.
So, it's actually a commercially funded project that has no impact on airport charges.
thegoaf - my experience is that the horrendous queues at Gatwick are usually for Check In, especially MYT and TCK, although I did queue for 40 minutes for BA in North Terminal this summer, and then breezed through security.

I use LGW at least once a month. I have a Monarch Vantage card which enables me to queue jump on their flights, excellent facility. This morning I took a relative to the south terminal for a flight to America. After the boarding pass check it took him 40 minutes to go through security. 6 of the machines were not in use. I say to LGW concentrate on the priorities like queueng standards and stop wasting time on traffic hazards like that absurd arch.
Another thing that annoys me intensely about LGW is that they have numerous fligfhts every day in summer which depart before 0600. That means an 0400 check-in time. But when you get through to the departure lounge are all the shops open? No way. Why not? If there arte passengers around the facilities to entertain/delight/occupy them ought to be avialable. But they are not in the early morning. It is as if the retail management have no idea of the opening hours of the airport.
Tomorrow I have an early flight out of the north terminal. It will be the first time that I have been at that terminal in the early morning for a year or so. I will look with interest to see exactly what is open at 0430. I am sure that I will be disappointed.

Couldn't agree more. Same thing even applies at T1 at LHR on early morning departures. Even much maligned LTN's airside shops/coffee shops are usually open for the first checked in passengers
