A sad but inevitable story

Guns, take this one slowly or you'll blow a valve. Sit down, strap yourself in; get the vrou to pour you a huge glass of Tassies.

OK, read on. This is gen.

Poor pilots irk instructors
08/05/2003 21:39

Pretoria - There is dissatisfaction over the training of pilots at the air force's Central Flight School in Langebaan after recommendations to suspend the training of four students were set aside by senior officials three times. Despite failing their crucial tests, the trainees are back on the course because top brass believe they have the potential to pass. The four students apparently failed tests on technical aspects and emergency procedure. Under the regulations, students may not fail more than three tests. One of the four was taken off the course because of his poor performance in the ground school phase of the course. The others' dismal performance was set aside because the air force's ratings board felt that their marks were nearly there. "The feeling is that they can pass with the necessary support," Colonel John Rolt, defence force spokesperson, said on Thursday.

The instructors and other officials feel that the rating process under the guidelines is "useless" and that the upper echelons of the force are ignoring their recommendations. The instructors feel they are in a better position to judge the candidates' potential. At a recent meeting with the ratings board, the instructors were requested to go to more trouble to get the students to pass.

They were told to "walk the extra mile", while they feel that they have already been bending backwards to prepare weaker students to qualify. "The message as we understand it is: 'Don't worry about standards or policy'. It is irrelevant whether a student takes ten flight hours or ten months to qualify. This type of intervention creates the impression that students do not have to practice."
A sad, but IMHO, inevitable confirmation that standards are going south in what was once a proud and capable institution. At least there is still the facility to be able to report on these events. And the sad part is that such inconsistencies are acknowledged by the authorities; even, it seems, encouraged.

Last one out, turn off the lights. That's if they haven't been nicked.

Blimey 4HP, thats a sad, sad story.

So, there going to push these people through the training courses, even though they are substandard?

I can see a whole lot of accidents happening in the near future.

Very sad state of affairs - damn this affirmative action rubbish!

Reading between the lines, it seems these guys are not applying themselves, and hoping for "pass one, pass all" policies to emerge.

Looks like their hopes are about to be realised!

That's old hat

Ag komaan guys,

this has been going on for close on 10 years. With the integration of the first NSF members, some guys pitched up for flying sloshed, some physiacally abused their instructors on a racial ground, etc, etc, etc. No white instructor can dare to ask for a wash test for fear of being labelled a racist.

Looking at the high tech equipment these guys are supposed to be flying in the coming years, I would not buy a house too close to final approach or extended centerline of any military base located in a built-up area.

Its time for this governement and all its hallowed institutions to bury the old "blame it on apartheid" and accept that for certain positions only the best is acceptable. IMHO flying a ZAR40M piece of military equipment (not even mentioning assisting with the flying of a ZAR250M piece of equipment filled to the brim with SLF) is one of such positions.

Well, I suppose that has put the NIS onto my case.

I could just as well have said; "Hoog wapper die vierkleur."

All you guys out there, Fly Safe.

Guns, Whats with the shoulder. One of those in and out surgeries?? I did that with the knee, it works good after a few weeks.
Anyway its been mentioned before as an opinion that the SANDF is not the SADF. Times change and the SANDF seems nothing more than a group of folks gathered to spend budget money. As an outsider I think they might have a problem in any engagement similar to days gone by......
On the other hand if they do get through, they can use that on the resume when they apply for SAA...............

Unhappy Snik

I cannot add more to this other than what I posted on the "SAA new recruitment agenda!!!" thread.
State departments and parastatals involved with aviation have demonstrated that the upkeep of standards mean nothing when it gets to the implementation of policies similar to this. If it's true, it's very, very sad indeed.

Guns, good luck with getting the shoulder lekker again soon.

I don't know about u, but failing your techinical and emergency procedures sounds pretty serious to me.... but again as bakela said keep up the policies no matter if it means dropping standards and making it unsafe for a lot of pilots out there.

Just another thought though, this is just on their initial training what about all the other highly skilled stuff they still need to master and the high tech equipment they will be flying if they can't pass that will they then get assigned a desk job all that money WASTED

But enough moaning from me now
(hope the shoulder gets better soon Guns )

Guys (any gals? )

There just has to be more to the story than this

As has been said, this is not a new story and much of what has been said in the story has been mentioned to me personally by instructors. Things like this do not just appear in the general press.

I reckon a lot has been said from those at the coal face to the 'powers-that-be', only to be told to toe the official line

I suppose there comes a time when you say 'enough is enough' and try another route. A whisper in Erika's ear and, bless her cotton socks, the problem is brought into the open.

Maybe now that it is public knowledge, questions can be asked about it in parliament, etc.

Guns, glad they didn't operate on your humour, boikie
