A number of former KQ people have been involved with Virgin Nigeria and current senior management includes Steve Clarke as COO and Chris Smyth as Chief Financial Officer.
KQ's Kenyan and expatriate and managment turnover rate has been rather spectacular.

Ah, Clarke and Smythe, now those guys found some novel ways to hide a couple of zeros in the books. It's funny that they ended up there. Good luck to them.

JFK

Virgin Nigeria has just applied (formally) to serve the New York route, its 67-page application is public and downloadable from USDoT.

The requested frequency is 4 x weekly (initially) to be increased to daily service eventually.

Used equipment is A340-300 wet leased as Nigeria is still CAT 3.

The lengthy document showed that VK intends to deliver a second A340 G-VSUN this month (well that leaves barely 3 days to deliver the talk!).

Also, fleet sections says the next 737s will arrive in Jan, Feb, June, Sept, Oct. and Nov. (incrementally).

There is also mention that VK is "in talks with Boeing" over the possible acquisition of either 767, 787, or 777 for long-term needs of the US routes (to be extended to such cities as Chicago, Washington, Miami, Atlanta, Miami, and Houston.

Exciting times ahead.

Virgin Nigeria threatened?

there are reports that TRANSCORP, Nigeria s new govt supported multinational company is to float an airline.I heard the rumours last week and did not believe until i read this story :

The nation’s troubled aviation industry is soon to have two new airlines that will operate as national flag carriers.

One of the airlines is being floated by astute businessman, Ibrahim Jimoh, owner of Global Fleet Oil and Gas, while the other is being floated by Transcorp, the new multi-billion naira corporate Nigeria firm.

News of the planned entry of the two new airlines, which names were not readily available, has sent jitters down the spines of local operators.

A source told BUSINESS DAY, that Virgin Nigeria Airways is also not at ease with the new development as the new airlines may be granted approval by the Federal Government to operate on the routes reserved exclusively for Virgin Nigeria.

Under the agreement in which Virgin Nigeria was formed, Lagos-London, Lagos-New York, Lagos-Dubai/Jeddah, Lagos-Frankurt, Lagos-Paris, among others, were reserved to be operated by the airline, with no other Nigerian registered operators plying the route.

According to our source, "the two have the full backing of the Presidency, so they are coming into the aviation industry in big style".

The source said the airlines might operate as national flag carriers just as Virgin Nigeria so that they would be encouraged to make use of state-of-the-art aircraft.

The source also hinted that the granting of the two national flag carriers status is as a result of problems that the aviation industry had been having. "The idea behind it is to ensure that the two airlines get routes that would encourage them to do everything according to the books."

Those who know Jimoh Ibrahim, the chief executive officer of Global Fleet Oil and Gas, described him as someone that would go for the best.

Global Fleet currently accounts for about 30,000 metric tons of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) petrol, which is distributed every month in the South West.

Global Fleet Oil & Gas was established in 2002 and came fully into operation in 2003. The mission of the company is to complement the effort of government in ensuring the availability of petroleum products in the country.

The company is one of the leading independent oil and gas marketers and boasts of over 5,000 employees all over the country.

Ibrahim, first trained as a lawyer, has other interests including the hospitality industry.

The other airline is to be floated by Transnational Corporation of Nigeria plc (Transcorp).

Transcorp is a new company floated by a consortium of banks, investment institutions and corporate organisation. It is already looking into setting up a refinery and other companies including the airline business. Meanwhile, a new airline, Avik Air, is currently bidding for Nigeria Airways hangar and corporate headquarters in Lagos.

The airline, which is scheduled to resume operations this year, is to run an aircraft maintenance base, different from its airline operations.

Re: Virgin Nigeria threatened?

For NYC those airlines are going to have to partner with someone, right? Otherwise FAA won't wear it given their opinion of Nigerian aviation. VK's DoT application specifies that their NYC services will be VS ACMI. By the time they are up and running VK will have been operating for quite a while and the 737s will be all in place.

I think this is ARIK Air - due to launch with Boeing 737-300 aircraft.

Arik Air buys Nigeria Airways’ hangar for N950m

Arik Air, a new chip on the block in the Nigerian aviation industry, BUSINESSDAY gathered at the weekend, bought the hangar.

It was learnt that the airline had reached an advanced stage in the negotiation to buy Nigeria Airways three aircraft, aircraft spare parts, workshop tools and equipment as well as its buildings at the Lagos airport. Before the national carrier was shut down for liquidation, it had on its fleet one DC-10, one Airbus A310 and one Boeing 737. The Boeing 737, BUSINESSDAY learnt, is worth $2 million. The aircraft spare parts are also said to worth over $6 million as at January this year when members of the National Assembly paid a visit to the airline. BUSINESSDAY gathered that the airline intended to use the Airways House as its headquarters to operate both domestic and international flights.

Arik Air, according to our source, wants to replicate what Ethiopian Airlines is doing by runing an efficient airline and maintenance hangar both for itself and other African airlines.

Currently, Nigerian airlines go to Ethiopia, Europe and the United States of America to service and repair their airplanes. Aviation experts have alleged that Nigerian airline operators cutcorners on maintenance because of the high cost in dollar and even the cost of transporting the bare aircraft to the various places of repair.

A source close to the liquidator of Nigeria Airways, Babington Ashaye and Company, said the discussion on the acquisition of Nigeria Airways headquarters, aircraft, aircraft spare parts and tools "is progressing very well and we hope the deal will sail through very soon like the purchase of the hangar" .

It is also hoped that the quick and meaningful disposal of Nigeria Airways’ assets would speed up the process of paying the ex-workers of the airline their entitlements.

Over 1200 staff of Nigeria Airways were forcefully ejected from the Airways by the Federal Government which also appointed a liquidator for the airline. Most of the staff are yet to be paid their entitlements while a few of them living in the airline's staff quarters were recently ejected without their entitlements paid to them.

Re: Virgin Nigeria Launch & Developments

VK hasn't announced new routes, or planes, since October! I recall the 100-day anniversary press release promised a whole set of improvements and announcements before Christmas.
Also, what is the status of G-VSUN wet-lease?

Re: Virgin Nigeria Launch & Developments

MarkD, it was from DoT pdf file that I got the info! But so far no news from VK or anyone about SUN joining the fleet anytime soon. In fact, VS is waiting for A340-600 deliveries before withdrawing SUN from their fleet. In other words, VK fleets plans are dependent on VS fleet activity.

Re: Virgin Nigeria

One Eye, I think the term is Forum.....Anyway there is a Forum for Virgin Atlantic and its private for employees only. If you meet that criteria, Im sure you can sign up and air any of your laundry there. You may be hard pressed to get "employed" folks to leave things out to public scrutiny. For sure none of the cockpit and probably few in the cabin........
Just an outsiders view.
