Apparently South Yorkshire are getting a better service according to the "present" Chief Constable.

Chief Constable Crompton said: “Our own helicopter is being serviced and under the old system it would have meant no cover, however being part of NPAS we have been loaned one - we now have cover where we would not have done.

I thought the yorkshire mutual aid set up, prior to NPAS was that WPOL provided the 24 hr cover with humpol and SYP working 19.5hrs each..?
How does that equate to “In the past we only had cover available on average for half of the week.”..?
In fact.. I cant see where the "improvement" is, now that SYP only fly 10 hours a day..??

There's a bit in the 8th April BBC News story, which Sid didn't include, that says :
That no doubt refers to the formal / informal ( ??? ) Central Region agreement between the four Midlands Air Units
to support each other on a "nearest aircraft attends" basis, or when their own aircraft is not available during their usual operating hours
Where's it mention Air Support, then?
Both forces already share a number of services with others forces, including police air support.....

Yeah, like a runaway train, with nobody at the controls and loads of screaming passengers. All those who know anything about driving the train were put off at the last stop.

Dear NPAS Trg Dept....
Will you **** off from flying around South Warwickshire so much. If there are jobs that warrant a police helicopter hanging around a normally quiet town people understand, however when it is for a training course in an area that is relatively untouched by the merciless defeat of gravity by a helicopter beating it into submission, it does no favours to those of us that have to operate nearby.
At least have the creativity of using different towns for each serial, or perhaps go to an area where the presence of a police aircraft may well do some good as a deterrent! Why Moreton in the Marsh fgs, it hasn't had aircraft operate from it since 1955!
By the way, judging by the apparent operating height, getting a camera with a serviceable zoom might help alleviate the problem

SS - You have to remember that for any courses of this type to be valid, every exercise should be conducted using exactly the same route/waypoint/task/photo target etc. If not, the students might complain they haven't been treated equally, and therefore claim some sort of redress, if they fail the course
Given the modern attitude to risk-management, equality, diversity etc; the risk-averse nature of so many large organisations; the lack of delegation to trainer level to be allowed to judge whether a student is no good, whatever the weather/route/task set; the need to evidence every twist & turn of the training as a result; and an almost pathological fear of litigation from any angle & for any reason, it should be no surprise that you'll see so many "same way/same day" flights, so that the organisation can be seen to have covered any & every small chink in it's very expensive armour!
You're quite right of course, that it might be more of a deterrent to the (otherwise unaware) potential miscreant, if they used a typical burglar's playground or H.A, rather than a sleepy hollow - although the latter might be grateful for some theoretical oversight, even though "it be toothless"
