Commuting FO
Hi everyone.
Does anyone have any experince as a commuting FO in an airline or business aviation? I was wondering if it possible at BA, Ryan Air, Easy Jet, Norwegian, SAS, Lufthansa or any other carrier or bussiness jet provider. I have heard about 5 on 4 off, but do you travel on your days off or how does that work?
Tx

At Ryanair, the roster is 5/4 in most bases but 5/3 in some. You get assigned a base and some guys choose to commute home for their days off if they don't live nearby. Commuting comes out of your off days (or you can travel after work if you finish an early). You can jumpseat for free on company aircraft between home and your place of work (sometimes involves multiple sectors if you don't have a direct flight home).
I don't know how it works in other airlines.

BA point of view.
Lots do commute, but probably not easy if you are junior FO on short haul - there's no 5/4 pattern it's variable days on, days off.
Travel before/after duty on a working day is allowed but if commuting prior to duty you are obviously expected to report ready to work up to the full limits of FTLs....
No free flights, you pay staff rates for commuting flights, even if you do end up on a jumpseat.

Lots of people commute at EZY too....there is a system in place -you apply for a "commuter travel letter" - whereby if you are commuting on an EZY route and there is no staff travel available, you can just turn up in uniform at the gate and, seats pending, use said letter for a free ride. I'm not sure if this facility is available for flexi-FO's though.

Very difficult in IT operator unless dedicated LH, which is hard to get as we are a MFF fleet. Random roster. Standby a particular problem, usually spent in a motorway service station halfway to the airport! We have a particularly flexible leave system which can be used to mitigate. Rostering utterly uninterested in helping out with block of work/DOFF.
One particular guy I work with, who moved bases after getting command and now commutes about 200 miles is without doubt slowly killing himself. Very un-family friendly.
