At Ryanair, the roster is 5/4 in most bases but 5/3 in some. You get assigned a base and some guys choose to commute home for their days off if they don't live nearby. Commuting comes out of your off days (or you can travel after work if you finish an early). You can jumpseat for free on company aircraft between home and your place of work (sometimes involves multiple sectors if you don't have a direct flight home).
I don't know how it works in other airlines.
