Hell....you don't even have to do a recurrent every 6 months and get more time with wife and kids!

Driver training is crucial for Atlanta-based UPS, which employs 99,000 U.S. drivers and says it will need to hire 25,000 over the next five years to replace retiring Baby Boomers.
Candidates vying for a driver's job, which pays an average of $74,000 annually, now spend one week at Integrad, an 11,500-square-foot, low-slung brick UPS training center 10 miles outside of Washington, D.C. There they move from one station to another practicing the company's "340 Methods," prescribed by UPS industrial engineers to save seconds and improve safety in every task from lifting and loading boxes to selecting a package from a shelf in the truck.

Me and my school friend are both planing to be CPL's. I also want to be a courier though for a few years, and he thinks it would suck..
Still gunna be a pilot though.
But the way I see it 90% of the PPRune pilots are the most negative bunch of people anywhere...

Lamb of God,
That is because they are pilots. I started my training in late 2007 and by early 2008 based on what some of the veterans were saying here I stopped my training before I had invested my lifes savings. Back then I recall many people in your position saying the same thing. PPRuNe has saved me both a fortune and a lifetimes heartache. I fly for fun only. Maybe when there are real signs of life ( not hope ) in cockpit recruitment and people are not paying airlines to be pilots the WWW´s of this PPRune world will be less " negative ".

Every pilot complains buddy.
Company pays the big bucks, on time, tax free.
Company management does not interfere with ops, IE: Captain's decision at all times.
Good HOTAC.
Pleasant cabin crew.
Superb airplane (L1011).
Lucky me, I suppose...

A quick calculation shows that USPS spends 9.3% of its revenue on drivers alone based upon 2009 operating revenue of 68 billion USD.
That is a lot of money on drivers, and excludes other staff of which there are 623,000+ in total. Total compensation and benefits to workers was 53 billion USD!
Thats one heck of an organisation, and unlike our industry staff costs are obviously the biggest cost centre.

I guess it comes from watching your promised retirement funds turned to smoke while management makes them selves rich at your expense. I guess it comes from watching management using bankruptcy like we use a landing checklist. I could go on, but 90% of us on PPrune have been there and done that. One of my previous airlines still owes me money after a trip through the bankruptcy courts. Good luck to you and your career. Guess there is nothing here for you to learn.

Well compensated and sweating for every penny....
I did some subcontract flying for UPS 20 years ago and here are a few of my observations.
The company is a well oiled machine.
The equipment on the ramp was first class and well maintained.
The employees were highly motivated, and well paid.
The employees worked extremely hard, and the company demands nothing less.
A phrase I heard often: “UPS drivers don’t retire, they break”. If the truck drivers are earning 70K you can bet they are working for every penny.
In retrospect I wish I would have had the foresight to have applied as a pilot. UPS is an impressive organization.
