is this a first?

Rumour has it that Air Canada are starting transatlantic services this summer using A319 aircraft, and the one crew are operating the round trip.
The route concerned is YYT-LHR, leaving Canada about lunchtime and arriving at LHR late evening. The same crew then operate the return, leaving LHR very late evening and arrive back in Canada in the early hours.
It certainly saves on hotel bills

Bar None,
AC will operate a daily YYT-LHR service starting in april.
The yyt-lhr leg is about 5h30 mins and about 5h45 back.
As for the rumor that it will be a turn that is incorrect. Our contract does not allow such a long duty day especially across that many time zones.
The crew will operate to LHR ,layover 24 hours then operate back the next day.
As the company has to train the pilots for ETOPS and NAT procedures as well as a route check, that flying will be done by the pilots of the Montreal base as it is the closest to YYT and has fewer pilots than the YYZ base to train.

Cheers

Any idea of the passenger configuration? Will it be an A319ER or LR?

Lufthansa operate transatlantic services with A319 and B737 aircraft. I think KLM operate transatlantic B737 services as well. As far as I'm aware these are business class flights. No idea about whether the same crew turns around and flies home though, hope not!

Astraeus are operating twice a week until Mid April LGW to YDF with the return flight going via YYT. Marketed via The Humber Valley Resort. Primarily for Humber Valley home owners and holiday traffic to the resort - the return via YYT is apparently just to top up the pax load. Any idea how Astraeus will crew this? Seems a long day for three sectors.

meaw, fully understand the "duty day" part of your comment, but the part about "crossing that many time zones",if they were to land back at the same airport they departed from, then they would have returned to the same time zone n'est ce pas?

The crew are slipping over there. With 2 a week, it results in a 3/4 day slip.

The LH and KL services are operated by PrivatAir. In addition PrivatAir operate the ZRH EWR service for LX.

PrivatAir operate up to 60 Atlantic crossings a week on A319LR/B737IGW equipment, including the world's highest utilisation B737 between AMS and IAH which is in the air 21 hours out of 24 - 6,700 hours in 2006.

All current scheduled operations involve crew layovers. Nice lifestyle with 4 flights per month for the crews, many of whom came from short haul where they operated that many sectors every two days before.

As I type, I'm in in the town of Corner Brook (which, as Rainboe says above, is where we stay during our 3 / 4 days layover on Deer Lake / YDF / CYDF flights).

Outside the snow is falling, and I can report that the snow condition for skiing / snowboarding on Marble Mountain are SUPERB.... lots of fresh snow, giving deep Deep DEEP powder!!! ... and NO queues at the chair lifts = nice!

Nb. The Marble Mountain ski centre is about midway between Deer Lake airport and Corner Brook (i.e. about 20 / 15 minutes respectively by car).

Newfoundland time zone is UTC -3.5 hours.

UK £1 pound presently exchanges as Canadian $2.25.... which means that things here seem very cheap. There's a hire shop at the ski centre which will hire boots, skis, poles, snowboards at very reasonable prices.... especially so given the exchange rate (UK folks remember to divide the listed prices by 2.25).

If your looking for accomodation, places to stay can be found here - wherein the Glynmill Inn is more than comfortable.

Nb. If you really want to push the boat out, you might consider renting a place at the 'Humber Valley' resort (this approximately midway between Deer Lake airport and Marble Mountain ski resort.. and are seriously nice properties !!!).

Downsides are that the weather can get cold very quickly, and it can get very windy (which does nothing for the windchill )... the snow can almost be too much (surely some mistake?)... and there's not a great deal of apres ski activities.

The local airport dudes are used to dealing with winter ops and, flying wise, the weather in Newfoundland can be described as 'challenging' (to say the least!). E.g. the other day in St.John we landed in 15-20kts and good visibility but within 40 minutes we had sustained blizzard conditions in 40 gusting 50Kts (which has to be seen to be believed!) and therein was on the limit for the de-icing rig to operate (i.e. in case it blows over). When we back tracked on rwy 11 and tried to turn-around to face up the runway the wind weather-cocked our B737-700 in the wrong direction (slippery runway), putting us into the deep snow at the edges of the runway, and we were bloody lucky to get the thing back where it should be and pointed in the right direction (mostly through judicous use of assymetric thrust)... it's all character building stuff.

... and "Yes", we did used to go LGW-YDF-LGW in a single duty day... but it was always a bit tight on flight duty hours and, commercially, didn't suit the passengers. Hence, we now go westbound departing around about midday and then return east bound through the night.... and a very satisfactory arrangement it is too !

Just trying to be helpful...

Nb. I was intending going snowboarding again today, but I find I'm totally knackered from yesterday exertions... mostly spent trying to extricate myself from thigh deep off piste powder snow, which my snowboard seemed to have an in-built knack of steering me straight in to!

N1 Vibes,

Yes you would end up in the same time zone that you left from but as a Montreal crew you are not in your time zone (1.5 hours difference) and that reduces your duty day as per the contract. We also have overseas and time zones rules in our contract that can be quite complicated and they apply here, making the turn impossible.

Not a big deal really. A holiday charter flight from Scandinavia to the Canaries is probably very similar in flight time and they probably don't get a night stop out of it!
