Flyglobespan Union Vote - *THE RESULT*

Dear Colleagues:

First of, I would like to thank you all for taking part and being pro-active with your replies and words of encouragement. I know we are going to do it this time because we all feel so strongly about the issues that we are faced with today. The overwhelming opinion is that the company we work for is a good company, and could be a great one with a few adjustments. I know that none of you wish to hurt the company or jeopardise the future success of the business, but I think I speak for everyone when I say that there has to be a limit. Just because it is legal, that does not make it sensible, and because there are limits, that should not make them targets.

It has been mentioned that the management would consider setting up a Flight Crew Council within the airline as a forum for issues to be aired. However, I cannot see the Chairman ceding to the will of mere pilots (or employees). I believe it will take more than a rational mature dialogue to get things done or else I wouldn't be writing this message. The management are blinded by the commercial department, and until such a time as the pilot body have collective teeth, that will continue.

So then, the results of the vote:

Votes From Permanent Employees:

BALPA: 40

IPF: 8

Votes From Contractors:

BALPA: 16

IPF: 3

5 people have advised me they have resigned but wish us all well.
2 people have refused to divulge their preferences.

That means I have received replies from around 60% of the total pilot workforce. Of those respondents, an overwhelming majority of 76% voted for BALPA as the union they would like to represent their interests within the airline.

THE NEXT STEP....

Since our management wish to push us to the limit, let us channel our collective feelings into one combined force, and show them they have gone too far. I respectfully ask that in the collective interests of our future within this company that we all join BALPA and put our personal opinions aside. I know this will be hard for some to swallow, judging by the opinions expressed in some of the emails, but I feel we MUST work together as a team, and hopefully the benefits will follow. I am sure it will be a worthy return on investment.

I know some of you have expressed doubts on the efficacy of BALPA and are worried about the cost of membership. Well let me put a proposition to you. The cost of membership to BALPA is discounted by 50% for the first year and 25% for the second, as well as being tax deductable. Let us all join BALPA for a trial period of ONE year, while the discount is 50%. That way we can all assess if it has been a worthy return on investment and it will have cost us no more than membership of any other union.

I know that if we all pull together as a team we really will make it happen......WE CAN DO IT!!!

So then dear colleagues:

This is the last notice you will receive from me. I only wished to be the catalyst and focal point for our collective thoughts, and I hope I have now done that. I sincerely hope you will all work together as a team so that we will all benefit. I have completed my BALPA application, and I hope you will to. Please please please do not let apathy take over, that is what they are counting on.

I am very excited about the future of the company we work for with the protection of union recognition, a scheduling agreement and decent hotels. Not only that, I am excited about all of us standing up as one, to show the management that we will not be treated like animals and will not accept 20 hour multi leg positioning duties, sharing hotel rooms or bending of the rules laid down in CAP 371 and our company manuals.

It has been very satisfying communicating with you all and receiving all of your words of encouragement. I wish you all the best and safe flying.

Kind regards

Bongo Bill

P.S Please check your junk mail as the email I will have sent you might have gone there.

Many thanks

Bill

Excellent Job Bongo!!!

I have to say Bongo, you have done a sterling job rounding us all up and actually making something happen. I for one will be completing my application for BALPA and look forward to all of our colleagues doing the same. I sincerely hope that this will really make a difference and would like to thank you for making the effort.

Well Done!
