Unique Open Culture at EZY
Interesting to learn this week that we at EZY have our own version of the mystery shopper doing the rounds of the bases. In our case however its a First Officer with a special mandate from the Ops Director to fly from all the different bases and feedback the 'word on the street' to our collegues in SleazyLand. He is quite easy to spot as he is normally based in BRS. He keeps his ear to the ground and then goes trotting back to his friends in the orange den with all the latest goss.
I just have difficulty visualising how this helps us with our moral problems and also I think its a bit at odds with our companies much trumpeted unique open culture. My friend in the know tells me that our mystery shopper has been doing this for quite a while now. Bit depressing really when the chap was lucky to be given a job even in the righthand seat at his age and background. Still, i am sure our lords and masters knows whats best for us all, but i cannot see how this sort of activity builds BRIDGES betweeN shopfloor and management eh Kevin?

A mystery shopper from within the organisation cannot be effective. When they encounter a problem they will understand all the things behind it and will not react the same way as a regular Pax.
There are many companies who specialise in Mystery Shopping and charge an approiate fee. To have them do all the routes once a year would be far more cost effective than taking a perm member of staff from their regular job and having them do something for which they are not qualified.
Not qualified? No. If EZY want to know how their service is seen then they need to hire the right people. In my view, this is a short sighted waste of money and an internal HR/PR disaster. It will back fire on them. In fact, it probably already has.

Typical...
Pushing the pilots to fly around with minumum block fuel or even less (4 kg/1nm!) in order to reduce costs, but now spending money on this utter nonsence!

ebenezer - The moral is that most airline management are complete self-serving spineless Barclays Bankers who seem to think that treating their staff in an abysmal & shoddy manner is something to be proud of. That said, never forget that this ethos is typically something that’s promulgated from the top !

I think what Brdgeovatrubbldwater is saying is that he hangs around in the crewroom and listens in on what is been said rather than pretending to be a pax!
To be honest, I think that is quite ok, because a lot of people won't say to a manager whats really on their mind and thisway they can maybe do something with it. (providing our F/O friend is smart enough to be confidential about his sources...)

I have seen this in other airlines. In a profession where trust is paramount this kind of management gambit is just another version of divide and rule.
Good management should know what their pilots think.
Supposing this guy (or girl) reports back on pilots who may have found jobs elsewhere? 'Managemennt' would have an opportunity to spike pilots trying to leave.
