Is Air Berlin Germany's Ryanair...?

...reading one of the local berlin newspapers last week (article here) about air berlin and its founder i gathered the following:

- the pilots are worked to the limit, so much that the german pilot's union suggest that this could jeopardize flight safety...
- joachim hunold, the company founder and owner, was portrayed as a hard man with a o'leary-like hatred for the idea of pilot unionization...
- the pilots are so scared of him that some of them have joined the union in secret and acts as secret union informants about all the safety breaches happening...

now how much of this is news and how much is rumour?

thanks!

2nd hand info only!

The boss at AB used to be a ramp agent and took alot of sh*t from flt. crews for years and years. Now he owns an airline and does big business with the ex formula 1 champ...

Does he hate pilots? What would you expect ?

Does any aviation manager like us at all ? Wake up!

Working conditions at Air Berlin and Germania are bad bad bad !

Well Air Berlin certainly hasn't got a Ryanair culture down the back. Flights to main airports; newspapers, sandwiches and drinks included; even a tray of boiled sweets to pick from as you board. For this I paid £38 return (all in) from Manchester. Flights on time - slightly early actually - aboard very smart aircraft. I don't know how they treat their flight crews, but the passengers are very content.

It strikes in a very irritating way that Air Berlin will not hire a non german-speaking pilot.
Or am I wrong ?

Entschuldigung, aber es gibt ein paar Piloten die Deutsche sprechen koennen. Und wenn dass uns ein bisschen vorsprung gibt denn warum nicht

Sorry, just pulling your wire, but even with speaking German it's almost impossible to get into any of the German nationals.

Don't worry too much about it though, the economy is on the floor and will probably take a couple of years and a Government change before it improves.

End effect: Pay's generally poor!!!!

Vorsprung durch Teknik.

Edited due to c p english and german spellung.

Thumbs down

Air Berlin isn't just an accident waiting to happen, the boss H has his own personal press corp keeping the acc..,incidence's out of the daily rags, amazing what free tickets and invitations to the summer residence and VIP partys can do for a PP record.

Anyone even hinting at getting organized will be mobbed and checked out before he's even finished filling out his membership card!

Duty time limits (max legal limits) only exist on paper where one might just make a mistake between a zero as in 20 or a eight as in 18 for a six as in 16, hours 2 man cockpit that is!

This is a guy who couldn't learn to fly and hates crews, what more do you want in a boss?

The rest is a card house with only one person taking the perks!

Makes for an interesting co-operation with NIKI, provided that what you´re saying is true...

Germany's Ryanair?

First of all, a few 'facts'.
*Air Berlin was founded in 1978 by ex Pan Am Captain, Kim Lundgren with one B707 in Tegel. He still owns 26% of the Company.
*The other owners, one of which is Joachim Hunold, include banks and larger retail institutions in Germany.
*J. Hunold joined Air Berlin in 1991 from LTU. He has a PPL.
He is the Managing Partner, not the owner and founder.
*Section 7 of the Ops manual is the same as used by Lufthansa, LTU, Germania etc.
*There are several pilots who are members of Vereinigung Cockpit (Germany's BALPA) who have not been 'mobbed'
*The longest serving pilot with Air Berlin is an American from Texas who spoke no German when he joined, neither did I when I joined in 1992.
As for comparisons with another UK airline, I would suggest it is much more like Monarch in that it began life as charter airline. Schedules were introduced in the 1990s and have expanded into the route structure they now have. They are still predominantly a charter airline.
Judge A Gen obviously has an axe to grind for some reason. Maybe he or she or lost his job with them or was denied promotion. Whatever the 'facts' are, it would be nice if he could make it obvious that he knew what he was talking about.
By the way, Air Berlin has the best company parties!
