Chokdee 2-3 Year well paid contracts would suit those say around 56/57 years old who would like a short term change, but only with the right kind of MONEY ( for White Knight's benefit!)
As for going to the beach every day, Been there and done that in Bahrain and at my time of life would be terminally boring, but Yes when children of a certain age then it works fine, but it does have its' limitations over the years.
As you say getting the Cabin Crew must be an even bigger headache as there is always a high turnover to contend with which does not happen with Pilots.
If EK paid $12000 they would get some SQ Captains for sure, and probably CAL, maybe even a few from Cathay( just as Beer money!)

MC my dear chap - you CAN have a very good lifestyle without being a mega wealthy person, believe me, I've been having fun for years with bu99er all spare cash. Oh yes, I agree that I'll need a nice little earner for my retirement one day but that's 2+ decades away.
If the paltry pay - yes I agree with you there - is not worth your time and would just inconvenience you then why do you post more on the EK related forums than any EK pilots do ???
Good luck staying in "mud island"

Count,
You know of any militants in Dubai who hate westerners? I have yet to hear of any and I live here.
This place isn't perfect but it's a lot better than a lot of places in the so called west. EK pay isn't great, I'll admit that. But you have to look at the overall package in order to compare apples to apples. And yes, you can have a good quality of life here. I certainly do. I couldn't fathom living in such congested sourroundings as in HK But again it boils down to personal preference. I'll be here for the next 20 + yrs unless the sky falls on my head or something equally bad.

Heres my thoughts having worked for both.
1. Hong Kong great for a holiday will really piss u off to live and commute in that city
2.Dubai bloody hot, humid and unbearable for 6 months of the year.
3.Both equally as expensive to live in
4.Weather in DXB less dramatic than HKG.
5.EK management dont give a stuff about your views
6.CX better layovers
7.EK better control of your roster(oops new bidding system introduced this month its a **** up)
8.EK less cabin crew per flight due to the fact that they expand before they recruit...youll be lucky to see a purser onboard.
9. CX grils look great but hell are they snobbish and un approachable
10. More hookers in dubai than HKG or Pat Pong...the streets are crawling with mainland chinese, russian states and Africans!!
11. Expat Indian culture in DXB will really piss you off after a while...they are everywhere and run the place.
So my best bet would be ..work for EK do as many short layovered long haul sectors, get the hours in and spend your days off in Jo Bannanas HKG..oops sorry rules again just changed not allowed to commute from Dubai on days off to live somewhere else... from THE MANAGEMENT!!!

Well I don't think Hong Kong and Dubai are both equally expensive to live in. Hong Kong is ranked as #2 and Dubai #48, (Tokyo is #1) And I checked this out in the Emirates Interview Prep

In my opinion it is very hard to compare the wage differences between company like anybody is trying here:
check:
- differences basic pay/gross pay incl. per diem,hr-pay etc.minus tax
- pension regulations
- housing allowance,school fee
also there is a huge difficulty to judge future development,e.g. tax system ,housing allowance might change..
also cost of living calculations are of course incl. housing, so if this is taken care of you have a totally different situation.
to cut a long story short,at the end I believe it is dependant on how much RISK you are willing to take if thinking about moving out of good old europe.

Had an interesting chat this evening:
Do you miss anything about the UK?
Not really (thinks of cold, wet, M25 etc), do you?
Yes, MY RIGHTS!
It may not be up to much, but at least CX have a union.
Thought provoking stuff.

Just some stuff to think about:
Cathay uses a strict and authoritarian grading system for every simulator and line event - be it crew- up, so- called training or regular check flights to keep the pressure up. Communication is essential before events. When it comes to fleet changes and upgrades, they may use all past reports against you.
You are expected to be highly 'professional'. On the other hand you have to cope with loads of mismanagement, admin chaos and failures caused by The Company.
There is no real crew resource management in Cathay.
You may feel comfortable if you have a military background, know some managers there or if you favour hierarchical systems.
