A few years back I was sitting in the tower watching one of my students doing some circuit consolidation.

It was very quiet - he was the only guy on frequency. On one circuit, as he was approaching the threshold I noticed that he hadn't made a 'final' call.

I mentioned this to the ATCO who remarked that he had noticed but since there was no one else about, he didn't think it was worth distracting the student just before touchdown.

So, the student touched down, did a roller and lifted off again for his next circuit. As he was climbing away a rather sheepish voice came over the radio:

"G-XX, errr..... very late finals"

I had a complaint from someone who got landing clearance @ "1/2 mile" on a beautifully clear day after advising of "expect a late landing clearance, 737 to depart ahead". I try, whenever possible, to get a/c airborne. I don't like telling them to hold for an extra 3 minutes while they wait for the inbound to land then taxy off & would hope for some flexibility from crews who would no doubt be delighted if it was them who was getting away in a gap. I wonder how many crews would take umbrage at this scenario. It certainly lessens my chances of trying to help people out in future. The complaint also came via the RTF, rather than the phone, thereby minimising my chance of a healthy discussion which could have been mutually beneficial.

Question

How does a G/A below DA affect your obstacle clearance? I thought that G/A performance was calculated from DA. If you G/A 150' below that, are you guaranteed not to hit that mountain? I know not really an issue at LHR, but what about Milan, Edinburgh etc?

You folks should read the CRM Debate on the previous forum.

Isn't it bleedin' obvious? Anytime before the wheels touch the ground is OK for a late landing clearance.

If you are unhappy with making a long flare or continuing below a certain height then put your finger on the button and ask the controller to confirm your landing clearance!

Have you never had an instructor tell you that a deer or something has strayed onto the runway?

If your late clearance is due to the guy ahead (taking off) not getting airborne quite quickly enough, under a lot of circumstances surely it would be safer to land without a clearance than to go around into the same bit of sky which is now occupied by the first chap!

Am I going to hit something? then go-around.
Baulked landings were quite common at CDG a few years ago.

Addinfurnightum (I think)

If you don't have enough fuel for a GA at LHR after a long flight, shouldn't you have diverted before then?

Or I am I just being naive? ;-)

Martin.

Its too late when you have shut down at the gate, deplaneing the pax, as happened to us receintly.

On area the controller said "contact the twr xxxxx good day"

We had no joy and called area again, who said they would try the twr land line, no joy.

We conducted a visual circuit and landed making all calls as required.

After shut down, with the radio on to try for a new clearence, we here

Regional xxx, clear to land. we looked at each other and cracked up.

As it turns out buddy was out of the tower "chating" to some girls and thought that if he at least said something it would be recorded.

Well just another day in wally world.
