Interesting questions concerning your aircraft

Here are some interesting questions about your aircraft you should consider if you have not already done so...

What is the lowest altimeter setting capacity of each altimeter installed?

Does your aircraft flight recorder include your satellite telephone communications?

What units of measurement do each of your altimeters display? Inches of Mercury? Millibars? hectoPascals? Millimeters of Mercury?

What is a hectoPascal?

Is your aircraft equipped with a Wide Area Augmented System (WAAS) Global Positioning System (GPS)?

Is your aircraft certified under Part 25? or Part 23?

What is the lowest Pavement Classification Number (PCN) number that your aircraft requires concerning runway strength?

Do you ever use reduced thrust power for takeoffs?

Who makes the choice of runways used for takeoffs and landings?

Who makes the choice of which instrument approach is used?

What is the impact on the your aircraft systems when using a QFE altimeter setting?

Is there an impact of using a QFE altimeter setting on the Enhanced Ground Proximity System (EGPWS) orTerrain and Awareness Warning System (TAWS) on your airplane?

What does the airplane flight manual say about Global Positioning System (GPS) sensor use in non World Geodetic System-1984 (WGS-84) countries?

Does it direct you to disable the GPS sensors?

Are you able to view the Global Positioning System (GPS) calculated altitudes on your Flight Management System (FMS) while in flight?

On what Flight Management System (FMS) page are they available to view?

Have you ever compared the GPS calculated altitude to the barometric altimeters while in cruise flight at high altitudes or low altitudes?

How did they compare roughly?

How does your meters altimeter round off altitudes? To the nearest 10 feet? 40 feet? 100 feet? 10 meters? 40 meters? 100 meters or what?

When do you plan to add TCAS II version 7.1 to your aircraft?

When do you plan to add Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) capability to your GPS receivers if you are not equipped with WAAS now?

When do you plan to add Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B/C) and Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) if you do not have it?

What is the cost of getting your aircraft equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) and Automatic Dependent Surveillance -Contract (ADS-C) for your aircraft?

What is the cost for Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) for your aircraft?

What does the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning system (EGPWS -TAWS) cost for your aircraft?

How many Satellite Based Navigation Systems (SBNS) exist or are under construction today?

How many Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) exist or are under construction today?

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment and answer the questions.

US, Chinese, Russian, the whole world?

How many Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) exist or are under construction today?

See above.

That's a pretty long list of questions there. Shouldn't you know quite a few answers as a former TWA 747 captain? Anyway, would be interesting to know why they are asked to begin with.

why questions posted?

I posted the questions as a result of my many International Procedures presentations (over 200) to many, many pilots at FlightSafety International. The answers to these questions are a function of the specific aircraft you are flying. They are in most cases not generic type questions. If you have the prospect of attending International Procedures recurrent training in the near future, you should have the answers to them prior to attending the course in order to receive the full benefit of the training.

If you have any suggested questions to add to my list, I would appreciate it you post them as well. For example, my questions and their answers concerning use of QFE would be of much benefit if you are about to make a trip into Russia where QFE altimeter settings are the standard in use in Russia.
Thanks!

Fair enough.

Does your aircraft flight recorder include your satellite telephone communications?

No satcom yet, once installed it will be used primarily for datalink application (EFB connection to the company), no idea yet if it will support voice com and if it will be recorded on either recorder.

What units of measurement do each of your altimeters display? Inches of Mercury? Millibars? hectoPascals? Millimeters of Mercury?

We can switch between hPa and inches of mercury, previous versions of the plane had both subscales displayed.

What is a hectoPascal?

The relevant SI unit, someone supplied a link above.

Is your aircraft equipped with a Wide Area Augmented System (WAAS) Global Positioning System (GPS)?

Not with WAAS, however with two GPS sensors.

Is your aircraft certified under Part 25? or Part 23?

25.

Do you ever use reduced thrust power for takeoffs?

Nearly always, both fixed derates and assumed temperatures and any combination of both.

Who makes the choice of runways used for takeoffs and landings?

ATC, if we need another runway we request it and deal with the consequences (delay, diversion).

Who makes the choice of which instrument approach is used?

The flight crew. Well, ATC usually tells us which approach is in use, however we are free to request another one to the same runway.

What is the impact on the your aircraft systems when using a QFE altimeter setting?

QFE operation is prohibited.

Is there an impact of using a QFE altimeter setting on the Enhanced Ground Proximity System (EGPWS) orTerrain and Awareness Warning System (TAWS) on your airplane?

The EGPWS is the reason for the answer above.

What does the airplane flight manual say about Global Positioning System (GPS) sensor use in non World Geodetic System-1984 (WGS-84) countries?

No info, operation into russia is not a problem though with out current map system.

Does it direct you to disable the GPS sensors?

No.

Are you able to view the Global Positioning System (GPS) calculated altitudes on your Flight Management System (FMS) while in flight?

Probably via the ACMS, not via the normal FMC.

On what Flight Management System (FMS) page are they available to view?

None.

Have you ever compared the GPS calculated altitude to the barometric altimeters while in cruise flight at high altitudes or low altitudes?

No.

How does your meters altimeter round off altitudes? To the nearest 10 feet? 40 feet? 100 feet? 10 meters? 40 meters? 100 meters or what?

Meters are just an additional display on the PFD if switched on. The altitude tape displays feet in intervals of 20ft, meters in intervals of one meter.

When do you plan to add TCAS II version 7.1 to your aircraft?

We are currently in the process of retrofitting the whole fleet, new aircraft have it already installed by the OEM.

When do you plan to add Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) capability to your GPS receivers if you are not equipped with WAAS now?

No plans at all, there is no commercial or flight safety case for WAAS currently in europe. There is one for GBAS though, the majority of the fleet is equipped for that.

When do you plan to add Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B/C) and Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) if you do not have it?

ADS-B is not currently mandated, however Mode-S enhanced surveillance is and differs only by one parameter from full ADS-B out. That additional parameter is transmitted by all our aircraft, however i have no idea if ADS-B out is already certified.

CPDLC is mandatory for all new aircraft since january 1st 2011, the retrofit date is february 5th 2015 (europe). We have currently most of our fleet equipped with CPDLC and the rest is currently being retrofitted.

What is the cost of getting your aircraft equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) and Automatic Dependent Surveillance -Contract (ADS-C) for your aircraft?

No idea, ADS-C isn't planned as far as i'm aware except probably the few longhaul aircraft in our fleet. Cost is something the financial department has to care about, air crew do not get this information.

What is the cost for Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) for your aircraft?

Same as above, we as pilots do not know the cost. Doesn't matter anyway, its a regulatory requirement and has to be installed anyway.

What does the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning system (EGPWS -TAWS) cost for your aircraft?

Nothing, it is standard OEM equipment, but then, the OEM probably can put a pricetag on it.

How many Satellite Based Navigation Systems (SBNS) exist or are under construction today?

Quite a few i guess. GPS and GLONASS, GALILEO for the euros and on the same frequency a chinese system, there might be a few more i do not know about.

How many Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) exist or are under construction today?

Again, quite a few, the US use their WAAS, europeans EGNOS, others use other ones.

In Russia we keep EGPWS running, by using a QNH approach and converting the QFE's passed to QNH. A conversion table then converts heights passed to altitudes. Ergo, still protected by EGPWS.

Very few of these questions are 'interesting'

Most are irrelevant.

A lot of them are indeed irrelevant for airline jocks, not so for N-registered bizjet owner/operator intending to fly to China... which is not suggestion that this rare species reads PPRuNe.

I'm impressed by the fact that an already excellent instructor is seeking real world knowledge to update his training material, rather than just presenting old crap.......

Well done! I look forward to next years recurrent

if memory serves, a pascal is a newton divided by a meter square, and the runways for takeoff and landing are designated by ATC and I will make sure their use is (performance and limitations) acceptable for my aircraft (a 737NG). It did happen to me once, they gave me a non precision approach with an 800 ft MDA and ceiling was OVC 007. I asked for another approach and they did have to give it to me. I coulda shot it, but I knew I was going to go missed.

How can QFE be standard use anywhere??? If the airfield is at any sort of altitude you won't be able to set the altimeter correctly.
