Question B737 "stunt" at Canary Wharf

Hundreds of workers at London's Canary Wharf tower were peering skywards yesterday (Wed) after reports that a B737 would circle the 850ft tall tower at 1,800ft as part of a charity event.

Many left their offices to watch from neighbouring lawns and open spaces but some admitted getting out of the building because of memories of towers and aircraft on September 11.

The aircraft was due to arrive at 14.30 precisely, but 10 minutes later Wharf workers they were still watching and waiting, despite false alarms over 146s and Saab 2000s leaving LCY and bigger aircraft passing over at 4,000ft to capture the Heathrow ILS.

Does anyone know anything about this event or whether it actually happened? It seems such a strange thing to do and would have taken much organisation and complex clearances, bearing in mind the volume of air traffic in the area.

Whatever will they think of next for a charity event? Dornier 328s swooping through the Thames Barrier, Falcon 50s flying under Tower Bridge? B737s looping over the London Eye? 747-400s beating up Big Ben? The mind boggles.

Stan.. what a prune you are! It was no "stunt"; it was a special flight for underprivileged children, which I wholeheartedly support and I just regret that I missed talking to it by just a few minutes. It never went below 4000 ft unfortunately... We'd loved to have let the kids down to 1500 ft for a real look-around. (Years ago that's what we'd have done without any doubt).

No "complex" clearances were needed, or necessary, and it was handled with no disruption to other traffic.

Thanks for that HD, and I don't mind being called a PPRuNe now I know what really went on!!

The trouble is that my informant, and hundreds of other tower workers, were under the impression that the aircraft would be at 1,800ft, which obviously would have been quite a spectacle. When nothing appeared at that height they thought it might all have been an elaborate hoax. They said they saw a few B737s passing overhead, the children obviously must have been on one of them. I hope they had a great flight.

What's next on the agenda for charity flights for the kids then HD?

Hi Stan.. I'm not too sure but there are bound to be some up to Lapland to see Father Christmas, etc., hopefully with some funny callsigns.

Cheers...

Or "Santa Air"?

Anyway, circling Canary Wharf at 1800´would have been in breach of Rule 5 of the ANO.

Cool

Well i recal a common clearance at the wharf; " not below 1500' until final" that gives an excelent view of the city and ...Tower!

Wink

Sorry Pointer, but that clearance has been changed to 2000ft and established at 5 miles. Even when visual. BTW, what is your view nowadays?
