i just got home from a vacation tripwith my family.I arrived at the airport at 530 am,departure 845 am. cheched in at the counter, then i was asked to take my bags to a line to have my bags x rayd ,after putting the bags in line(on a cart) my wife reads a note on the x-ray machine that says film will be damaged if it goes trough this machine,my wife tries to retrieve the film ,the nice lady says NO,i spoke to a supervisor and was able to retrieve the film. Al the bags cleared the x ray except one,and the only thing in it besides clothes was an alarm clock.went to the Admirals club at concourse E (before security)an hour later left for our gate (concourse D) ,we used concourse E security checpoint and the attendant asked why we were using that concourse ,i explained i was at the admirals club and would use the passageway to concourse D,she asked "what do they have at the adnmirals club"? I believe she was making sure that we were at tha admirals club(why would i lie about something like that?)
Finally were getting in the plane, but no so fast.gave the gate agent my boarding passes and passports,we were asked to go to go and have our hand bags inspected again, took my shoes off the y checked our passports again to make sure that we were the same people that 2 minutes back had just checked with the gate agent.
Being a US citizen(living overseas) and totally in favor of better security,I can only say that I will go somewhere else on vacation next year, maybe the pacific coast of Costa Rica,Paris or maybe Cape Town but not the US.This is bordering on paranoia.
I would like to know if a pax with half an empty coke can goes to the flight attendant and askes her to open the cockpit or he will cut her throat, what do you think she will do????
Its obvious that no one is going to get on board with a gun now,but who says the gun wont be placed in the cabin by catering or ground personnel,or even being put on at a foreign station(were security isnt as tight) and being retrived on the next domestic portion of the flight.these are just a few thoughts after experiencing the hassle myselfI am happy that I fly corporate aircraft for a job and dont have to put up with most of this crap

IT'S not just little toy guns that get confiscated by eager, unintelligent, brainless security staff at LAX.
All i can say is make sure you have the right brand of Anti-perspiant in your HOLD baggage when it goes through the scanners.
I had two small cans of anti-perspirant spray removed from my checked-in baggage and confiscated from me after being told it was an "Offensive Weapon" (yea right, like i was going to somehow access the hold area mid-flight, find my suitcase and cause havoc with these 2 cans)............oh by the way i could keep the Gillette 3 bladed Razor ??????????????????????.
JUST WHAT PLANET Do THESE INDIVIDUALS COME FROM??

Aerosol cans (items for personal use) in limited quantities (not exceeding 7.5fl oz) have ALWAYS been permitted in hold baggage.
This is an IATA approved law under the Dangerous Air Cargo regulations which the FAA adhere to.

Nobody yet has answered the question put by many.... why do we as Pilots have to wait without our belts and shoes whilst pax wander through... surely because " something in your bag was a funny shape" is not a real reason...... I know what offensive weapon I would use if I were an islamic slepper agent.... it certainly wouldnt fit into my shoes since at MTOW it is quite big and heavy!
Take the muppets off security and more importantly the uber-muppets that lay down some ridiculous policies on security.....all after the horse has bolted

Yep, it's a good thing that they protect us crews from ourselves by not allowing handy things like Leatherman's with screwdrivers & so on in the cockpit.
I personally use the razor-sharp fire-axe to tighten the odd lose screw now.

explains some of the customer service...
from today's CNN:
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) says a total 106 airport workers at three Southern California airports have been indicted on immigration charges and are being arrested.
The DOT's inspector general made the announcement Friday morning. A press conference is scheduled at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles for later in the day.
The workers -- at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), John Wayne Airport in Orange County and Los Angeles' Ontario Airport -- are accused of lying about their immigration status and providing false Social Security numbers on their applications for security badges.
The majority of the employees worked in "custodial, maintenance or food service jobs at the airports, though some worked as security screeners," the DOT inspector general's office said in a written statement.
The people charged had security badges that gave them access to the most secure areas of the airport, including access to planes, runways, ramps leading to planes and/or cargo areas, according to the statement.
As of August 16, "366 people have been arrested at 17 airports, and 381 have been indicted. Of those, 231 have pleaded guilty or have plea agreements pending, and 124 have been deported or are awaiting deportation proceedings," according to the office of the DOT's inspector general.
I'm based in the San Francisco bay area and the crowd of security screeners at SFO is a real sight. Mostly recent Filipino immigrants with limited English, giving proof to the "give a little person a little power..." theory.
A complete farce at SFO all the time.

Oh great. Something as basic as illegal immigration doesn't show up when these security personnal apply for a job. What next? Would being a member of Al Q'aida disqualify security personnel? One suspects not.
When is the USA going to sort it's airport security out so it isn't the laughing stock of the entire world? It was before 11/9 2001. It still is - even more so.
