In fact, the OP's original question was 'loaded' when you view his subsequent #11 where he revealed to us that he was passenger on the subject flight, wouldn't you say?
It will be a pity if it comes to it that all PAs are prefaced: "WITHOUT PREJUDICE" - or indeed follow the example of that Dan-Air captain - I think - whose only PAs were: "Half Way!"

Thank you all very much for your posts - both content and tone have been very illuminating. I didn't really do much flying until I was in my forties (couldn't afford it). But since then I've been flying constantly for work purposes for 30 years, and I'd never encountered anything like that. Still, that's how statistics work, I suppose.
