Abort and Go-Round @ BHX 12.3.17
 

Does anyone know anything about the aborted landing of FR3902 at BHX on Sunday 12th March? Captain told passengers there was an aircraft on the runway.

I suspect it will turn out that there was an aircraft on the runway.

Looks like it was departure TCX68CP. Maybe a bit tight for a departure between preceding lander EZY193 and RYR459L (FR3902).
Not everything goes according to plan! All in a day's work!
Anyway, every approach is to a missed approach. The landing off the approach is the bonus!

Dear Lord..... hope they evacuated all schools and nunneries within 50 miles..

This was initiated, however more remote institutions had to be contacted by post, so should be cleared by this afternoon or tomorrow morning at latest.

This wasn't one of your U-Tube video, "6-inches-from-the-ground" affairs. We were, judging by the buildings we were passing on the starboard side, at about 50 ft. The engine note changed and the descent stopped. Then the nose went abruptly right up, the power went right on, and we climbed sharply. BHX is rather hedged about with residential areas - Marston Green village on the other side of the railway, and a small estate just over the hedge beyond the end of the runway - so I wondered if these incidents are common...

Can't find any stats for Birmingham, but you can see at least one go-around at Heathrow most days (591 in total in 2015).

They are very common.
Especially during bad weather.See 'you tube'.

One of our bosses ('KCW') put a sensationalist journo straight by telling him that if his staff didn't have a couple of go-arounds a day then his staff weren't working hard enough...

Back in about 1988 or 89 I saw a 1-11 go around on 33 at BHX due to an N reg citation entering the runway when he had been told to "Hold Position". The confusion was caused because in the USA line up clearance was often given as "Position and Hold". I think the 1-11 went around from about 50 ft.

HD - I was idly looking up the definition of "nunnery" and I see, since the late 16th century, it also means a brothel. (Google it!)

Yes Leapfrogger you indeed survived a go around. It could be that the aeroplane on the runway had to get priority to go and do chem trails or that you were seconds away from your doom or may be it was just a common maneuver flown by a well trained crew using good judgement as happens everyday at busy airports and not so busy ones too. In fact pop along to the boundary of a small general aviation airport and you will see light aircraft doing ten in a row, even after they have landed!

Sorry to tell you that you don't have a story of life or death to dine on, sometimes people who have trained a lot do in fact know more than what some other people who saw a YouTube video do.
