Man - Jfk Via Ams.
Afternoon,
I am off to NYC and it looks like I am booking online with OPODO with KLM MAN - AMS - NYC if the flight is on time we land in AMS at 12:15 (AMS TIME, 09:55 dep from MAN) and the connecting flight departs AMS to NYC at 14:00 is this enough time or do you reccomend the dreaded early 6am flight to AMS?
Once in AMS do I have to check in again or is it one check in at MAN and that sees my bag go all the way to NYC? Or do I need to collect my bag and re check it in!!?
Are the KLM 777's nice inside with good IFE?
Thanks in advance.
EGNH.

I went to the Carribean in 2007 on KLM from MAN - The times you mentioned were very similar to my flight times. We had plenty of time and the bags went through all the way to our destination.
Not sure about the IFE on the 777 as I travelled on the MD11 but the IFE was pretty poor (I think MD11s are getting PTVs now?) but it was nothing the iPod and a few magazines couldn't sort out.
Have a nice time in New York

Plenty of time . Last time I connected in AMS my scheduled transfer time was only 1 hour 15 min.
If you're flying both sectors with KLM your bag should be tagged to your final destination.

Hey EGNH,
Just returned from Dubai on KLM 777-200 and travelled to JFK with them. Connection times in amsterdam are more than adequate thats if your Manchester flights on time.Ptv's are really good with KLM aswell not as good as Emirates but it does its job for a long haul flight check out seatguru before you fly but row 30 is cracking no windows but good bulkheads have a good time let us know how you get on.
Regards steve

Thanks.
Is it true on American carriers that you can listen to Air Traffic Control as a part of the IFE? I do not believe this just wondered if it had any substance?
Allegedly only US carriers?

On UAL, it is USUALLY on Channel 9, but on some aircraft (747?) it is on another channel. They are the ONLY carrier that does it and they do it through the third radio, which is normally used for ACARS, too, and not used by the crew for voice comm.
Some Captains don't like it, because some passengers seem to think it is their window into the front office and entitles them to criticize phraseology, a missed radio call, a frequency error, etc, etc... In addition, because it taps into the voice comm on VHF1, if there are any irregular calls between aircraft and ATC, it opens things up to misinterpretation, etc.. Captains often brief turning it off as part of the pre-flight briefing of engine failure on takeoff, but it is not always the first thing on most people's minds when it hits the proverbial fan.

Delta?
I can fly direct with Delta on a 757 from MAN to JFK but heard bad reports about Delta's service?? Hence why I am leaning towards KLM for the same fare. I do not mind going to AMS first either.
Any thoughts on Delta anyone? And I assume the 757 wont have any IFE?

EGNH - i see your location is leeds. have you not thought about doing the KLM lba - ams service, travelling from your local airport?
admittedly, the DL man - jfk or CO man - ewr direct services are quicker, if you are interested in aviation and enjoy flying, i think i too would look to maximise the number of flights availble too.

I know AMS very well but have only transited once, GLA - AMS - YVR. We had about 30 mins between flights, only enough time to stop for quick smoke (yes, I know, it's a filthy habit) then yomp to departure gate. Be aware, Schiphol is a pretty large airport but well laid out and signposted with good facilties. The time you have in transit should let you connect comfortably, no need to touch baggage.
We also flew KLM but on MD11, the experience was horrendous. IFE was a large screen but headphones kept adjusting themselves to full volume almost deafening me, overhead lights would not turn on then came on by themselves when trying to sleep, the sludge they served as sweet & sour chicken was unrecognisable and CC indifferent to complaints. KLM could not be bothered with my complaint when we came through on return. Will never fly KLM again.

Try www.airlinequality.com.
You will see that Delta has mixed reviews. I've generally found them OK although their JFK terminal is prone to congestion. Helps of you like Pasta & Pizza westbound. They are introducing seatback TV and this includes 757s.
The main reason for going via a hub is to get a cheaper fare (for example LHR - NRT may be cheaper via ZRH). If the fare is the same you might as well travel direct (unless you are an aviation enthusiast and see a change at AMS as a bonus).
Baggage will be automatically transferred at AMS if you are travelling KLM throughout and yes 1 hr 45 is adequate - well in excess of the minimum connection time of 50 minutes in the Official Airline Guide.
Bear in mind that CO flies direct MAN - Newark (OK for Manahattan) and Pakistan Int'l flies to JFK three days a week so you could check prices for those airlines. I've no experience of the latter.
You won't get the ATC though. As Avman says only UA and then, I believe, only domestic sectors. (Someone correct me if I am wrong).
Have a good trip!
