Old-skool coincidence LHR

I was minding my own business on Saturday 6th March, around 4.30-4.45pm when my ears picked up the sound of an old airbus coming into LHR. It was one of the DHL A300-600's easily identifiable by it's garish colour scheme. Nothing unusual, but then the next in line was an A310 and then another A310 after that!

I should imagine that there aren't too many of the older airbii () flying around anywhere in general, but to have 3 of them in a row in this day and age was for me quite a long shot statistically speaking and with respect to nostalgia somewhat heartwarming. Back in the 80's and 90's there was a plethora of them criss-crossing the skies of Europe, but they are somewhat thin on the ground these days. The powerplants sound is pretty unique these days compared to the newer generations engines.

regards

A300 operators still coming into the UK would include:

Lufthansa
DHL (plus maybe other parcel carriers and cargo airlines)
Monarch
Onur Air
Olympic(?)

A310s would include:

PIA
Air Transat
Jordanian(?)

Unusual occurence that you spotted, but possible viewing at other airports as well as LHR I guess.

The 2 A310's were most probably of middle-eastern/whateverstan origin as that seemed to be the ideal route for the beast. I remember flying with AF from Paris to Dubai in one and also LH to Bahrain, if I remember correctly.

I didn't recognize the livery of the 2 A310's perhaps a kind soul with the movements list for the time could enlighten us.

A300-B4-200(not -600)in DHL colours is operated by European Air Transport, Brussels. We currently have 14 in service (Recently reduced from 18).
If you were to go to Leipzig at night you would see 10 or more at once.

Other A300-B4-100/200 freight operators in Europe are TNT, MNG, Kuzu, ACT.
Also of course there are UPS and FEDEX A300-B4-600Fs.

Note the type numbers. Although normally referred to as A300-600, the later version of the A300 is actually an A300-B4-600.

Hope this helps.

I think I saw the A310's on hcam the other day. One was a Royal Jordanian Cargo and the other was Oman Air. I think it was from the same day as you saw them as I remember thinking how interesting it was to see the classics one after the other at LHR. Always love the sound of the A300's and A310's.

My first transatlantic flight was on a A310 of Wardair in 1989 - those were the days!

lhr-lgw.co.uk has a list of flights from March 6th, though I don't know how exhaustive it is.

2 DHL A300 movements during the evening:

BCS4101 BCS4101 OODLE A30B EDDP 2256 615 27R
BCS758 BCS758 OODLE A30B LIMC 2044 615 27L

These A310 movements - Oman Air (leased Hi-Fly a/c) and PIA:

OMA911 WY911 CSTEI A310 OOMS 1643 330 27L
OMA912 WY912 CSTEI A310 OOMS 2142 330 27R
PIA787 PK787 APBEC A310 OPKC 1439 320 27R
PIA788 PK788 APBEC A310 OPKC 2120 331 27R

But the timings of the A310s don't match up with you seeing two together, nor an A300 before them.

Fedex also operate the A310-200 and A310-300 in Europe, as well as the A300-600.

Thanks for all the replies gents! Especially Rhys who has nailed it and uncovered my numerical dyslexia at the same time

From tone, the engines of the A300 sound identical to the Beluga and almost like those of the A310's. Does anyone know what powerplants are used on these types ? I would have thought CFM's rather than GE or RR.

Wonderful sound on a blustery day with the engine tones changing frequently, but not as good as the Starfighters running downwind and making a hooting sound Ah!

Ha ha, having experience that a few times, I don't think we'll be seeing too many of those coming into LHR, though i'm sure that there might have been a few Starfighters transiting through Northolt over the years, back when noise abatement was an ethereal concept. Just why do the CFM engines make so much (pleasant) noise compared to the other manufacturers offerings ?
