Some agencies are saying Australian pilots do get an Australian seniority number now. They actually say fly in Japan and then return to Aus as a direct entry captain. That last bit is a little far fetched though I think.
Jetstar Oz would have to openly state that, otherwise a statement made to that effect would have to be verified in writing by Jetstar in Australia. |
Would it be remiss to point out that ANY who thought a path through any of the subsidiaries could see them end up in J* OZ is...interesting?
Firstly point out that residency/ability to live in OZ to fly for J* OZ would be a requirement, for whatever reason doubt J* head office will facilitate that for non qualifiers. EXISTING J* OZ pilots/QF pilots can/have taken LWOP to go and fly with subsidiaries entities, some just for the experience, some to accelerate command, whatever. The thought that you can become a J* OZ pilot by being a contract pilot in a subsidiary entity....interesting, maybe delusional. Take your pick. Cheers. |
The consecutive days off
Hi guys, I was looking at JJP new commuting roster; they are now offering 10 consecutive days per month. Anyone knows if we get to attach annual leave into the day off? Do they provide 1 travel day at the beginning and 1 at the end of the 10 days off, like Korean Air for example. Thanks!

Hi All.
I have gotten the agency package for this job (DEC A320 rated) and it talks about minimum secured salary for 60 hours only. Above that it will be overtime pay. The package however is based on 80 hour block(10.5K net). Agency is saying that flying is actually close to 80 or even more. BUT..... All I want to ask is do JJ* pilots actually fly 80 hrs or the company tries their best to restrict flying to 60 hrs per head to avoid paying OT. If it is 60, The Net Salary after tax is really less for a Capt I think (8.2K USD). Can somebody verify this? Cheers!!! |

So currently an expat at JJP. The 16 on 14 off is real and a foreign captain is currently doing that. Currently expat FOs are in the upgrade pipeline. Whether or not they make it through to the other side remains to be seen. There is certainly lots of encouragement from management for the foreigners to upgrade. Check and training captains are also fond of it and encourage many to go for it. You will work hard. They cannot willfully keep the hours down to avoid overtime for cost saving. Chronic crew shortages. As with anywhere, over 90% are great guys. Only a handful are challenging. Training is long and excruciating. If a commuter you will not go home for 5/6 months until it’s completed. Be prepared to memorize things that have no useful purpose to satisfy the JCAB overlords. Attitude is very important. Show eagerness to learn their culture and you will be welcomed. Happy to answer any PM’s. Of course this is all prior to the industry as a whole going down the toilet. That said Japan domestic is still ok. FOs on 40ish hours and skippers near 60. For now.

Funnily enough, despite JAL being a major investor, staff travel is technically not permitted with them. However, they still appear on the staff travel website and bookings can be made. Most get away with it but some have recieved a phone call from a manager stating not to use them after the ticket had been used. 2. The tax situation is a bit confusing. My understanding is it works on how much you earned your previous year. So first year is unknown so you're put in the lowest tax bracket. pretty close to no tax but still paying some. 3. During training you can expect roughly ¥700,000 as a captain. Once checked to line, assuming we go back to sense of normality with overtime ¥1,200,000. The payroll system changed last week so all previous payslip were lost. Good luck, wish you all the best for whatever option you take. |

A "crystal ball" tells me that even when hiring restarts they'll prioritise Japanese pilots furloughed from other operators both within the country and from outside, like Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, etc. followed by expats who passed their assessment already but no starting date due to cv19 before even thinking of new hires.

It is comparable to an initial Class 1 in the west plus a chest x ray and brain waves. And BMI < 30

Guys, being an airline pilot in Japan is a big deal. It is not seen as casually as in some western countries nowadays.
This is reflected in the medical and in many other things. Make of it what you wish. |

Rumor has it that both expats and locals still under training are getting the boot, also expats who's contract expires within the winter schedule (down to 19 aircraft from 25) won't be renewed.
