Indonesian Official Strikes Flight Attendant
A high-ranking official from Bangka Belitung struck a Sriwijaya Air flight attendant after he was told to switch off his mobile phone for landing.
Zakaria Umarhadi, head of the Bangka Belitung Investment Coordinating Board (BKPMD Bangka Belitung), was using his phone just after the airplane had landed at Depati Amir Airport in Bangka Belitung from Jakarta on Wednesday night.
The flight attendant, Nur Febriani, approached him and requested he comply with flight regulations by turning off his phone until he was inside the terminal. Zakaria refused and continued to use his phone. Febriani then told him again that using it inside of the plane was forbidden.
Zakaria yelled at her and struck her head and face with a newspaper as he was exiting the plane.
Agus Sujono, spokesman of Sriwijaya Air, said that security officers took Zakaria to the police station after Febriani, who has been working with Sriwijaya Air for five years, reported the incident.
“[He has been] repeatedly warned,” Agus said, as quoted by Tempo.co. “During take off [he was warned], and it happened again during landing.”
Zakaria’s lawyer, Elisa, said that Zakaria was making an important phone call with his child when Febriani approached him.
“Zakaria’s wife was about to have a surgery, so he needed to communicate with his child and other family members,” Elisa said, as quoted by Okezone.com. “He was calling his child [when he was warned].”
Bangka Belitung Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Indra on Friday afternoon said that Zakaria had been charged for abusing Febriani.
“He has been quizzed and detained at the police office,” Indra said, as quoted by portalkbr.com on Friday. “Based on the investigation results and witnesses’ testimonies and evidence that we had confiscated, we have charged him with article 351 sub article 1 of the criminal code on abuse, which carries maximum sanction of two years and eight months.

I hope the he gets the maximum penalty, but I really doubt he will end up serving any time as he is a "high-ranking official".
If the phone call was that important, why did he get on the plane in the first place? What if it was delayed 15 minutes and still flying when he absolutely had to make that phone call? Too bad he isn't also being charged with using a phone in a moving aircraft. They should be issuing at least a handful of those fines in Indonesia on almost every flight. I doubt many people would learn if they kept the fines low enough, and it would create a new revenue stream for the government.

The flight attendant concerned was on TV-One and Metro TV last night being interviewed giving her version of events. The government official apparently did this twice, once before talk-off and again after landing and had been warned before take-off. She filed a police report immediately; a relative of the official then approached her and offered a apology. The attendant accepted the apology but then said she will continue to press charges so that something like this doesn't happen again, not only to her, but to other flight crew as well. Good on her.
Interesting that the the official himself didn't offer an apology but had to go through a relative as would have been a loss of face if he himself had apologized. Don't know whether Indonesian airlines have a collaborative blacklist, but I hope this guy gets blacklisted on all airlines. Let him catch a boat and bus next time he wants to travel.

The assault has been a trending topic on Twitter and Facebook with most people appalled by the assault.

A PASSENGER using an iPhone mid-flight allegedly caused a compass malfunction on a US plane that sent it several kilometres off course.
Business site Bloomberg reports that the compass came good at the same time a flight attendant asked the passenger in row 9 to switch off their smartphone.
Bloomberg reports that despite recent calls for rules to be relaxed surrounding switching off phone functionality in-flight, airlines have logged dozens of cases where passenger electronics were believed to have interfered with navigation systems.
The incident is understood to have taken place in 2011.
The website AppleInsider said that modern wireless interference is believed to be associated with cellular radios in phones.
"That's why airlines that use the iPad as an electronic flight bag do not use cellular-capable versions of Apple's touchscreen tablet," AppleInsider said.
