Indian Airlines tail strike

For a local nEws paper,

NEW DELHI: Over hundred people aboard Air India's AI-614 flight had a miraculous escape on Monday when the tail of the aircraft hit the runway at a very high speed while landing. The incident occurred at 8.30am when the plane was flying into Mumbai from Ahmedabad with 121 passengers.

An apparent miscalculation by the pilots led to the aircraft not touching down at the correct angle, leading to the tail strike. Luckily, no one was hurt.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a probe into the incident. "I have sought details from the airline," DGCA chief Bharat Bhushan said.

Sources added that the two pilots, including a woman commander, would not be flying till the report was out so that necessary correctional training (called refresher), if required, was undertaken by them before being allowed to fly again.

"Mostly, tail strikes occur during a landing when a captain flares the aircraft over and above the prescribed angle. This can be serious as the speed of an aircraft (like in the Monday's incident) during landing is over 250 kmph and the impact can even lead to the plane breaking apart," sources said.

...

maybe 20 years later (JAL, CAL B742's)... rather unusual for a tail strike to take the tail off at the same time (MD80 landing test not a "tail strike" cause, nor the LH MD11). Perhaps they are talking about Part 27 aircraft?

Why would you go around if you suspect a birdstrike, upon landing?
Tail scraping an A319 is quite an effort.
But then again, another girl landed an A320 on its nose wheel in india...

The news reporting is pretty dicey. Can anyone understand what actually seems to have happened?

Sources said cockpit voice recording indicated Capt Samaira Ali suspected a birdhit as she came in to land. “She followed birdhit landing procedures. The CVR noted that the pilot said she will attempt a go-around. While she was trying to take off again, she pulled the flaps up, but the aircraft had no power to take off, and as a result she skidded on the runway,” said a source. “This is an extremely rare occurrence,” said another source.

How in the world did this female manage to tail strike an A-319. You would need a pretty high pitch attitude for you to tail strike a 319.

And the comment on quite a few of the Indian female pilots especially the 21 year old's is spot on. Most (exceptions of course) have gotten through for reasons other than merit and I shudder to think when a REAL emergency occurs and one of these damsels happens to be a captain.
