Does any one know how much corneal thickness is allowed after LASIK operation in Civil Flying by the DGCA ?

I am not quite sure with that but all i know is that cases related to cornea are case to case basis[individual] (Refer to medical handbook page 32). To my knowledge doctors don't prefer to operate patients with thickness less than 400 microns. and i don't think there is any such mandatory parameter set by DGCA regarding cornea thickness as one of my friend got it done and has no major issue getting through class one.

Pls refer to another pprune page for more information about risks and issues with DGCA.

Yes there is "no fly" period, In fact to my understanding from a conversation with my friend who got lasik in 2008, Once the lasik is done, you may consider your medical lapsed, and need to get your Class one renewed if you wish to fly, not sure why he said that but i predict it is because in the medical hand book there are some clauses related to Surgeries and rest periods with medical previlages, maybe any of them got violated .

Also note that after you surgery, your medical (renewal/initial) would only be done at any of the 3 initial centers(IAM/AFCME/5 airforce jorhat) & Not from any regional renewal center. Also he hinted that you may need some additional test related to eye, and for him it was an routine renewal and just an additional test to be done from outside (if you already got those test done prior, u may get the medical done the same day).

The rest period I guess is solely your discretion because for every individual it varies in time to recover. and the doctor who operated shall be able to determine a time more appropriate than any one else along with how you feel because i don't think though you read, when he looks inside your eye you cannot get carried away if you got glare .

Well my friend hasn't informed the medical authorities but he said that, the IAM doctor(Eye specialist) personally yelled at him for not consulting them before the surgery but they didn't objected him, in any manned while issuing the certificate. So it is Strongly Recommended to consult the Medical Authorities while informing DGCA before the surgery. These days, not sure about IAF but the masons (DGCA) always curious to build a wall (issue) between you and your licence, If there are too many walls you may eventually need a dynamite So consider the risk.

Hope this helps
Cheers

Smile DGCA class 1 lasik

Hi there guys
I have a doubt regarding the DGCA medicals .I have done both my class 2 and class 1 medical. I have had LASIK surgery on both my eyes around three and half years back. My power was around -3 before I did the surgery. Before going to DCGA medical I went to eye test with 4 eye hospitals ( the best one in my city) all declared that I have 6/6 vision. In my class 2 also I was declared that I have 6/6 vision. But in my class one the eye doctor told that I have a power of -0.5(axis -65) in my right eye alone .he told my left eye has 6/6 vision. After which he told me to get a special OCT scan just to check the health of my cornea. End of the day the doc told that everything is fine. But that I have to wear glasses while flying alone. He told that if I would come for a normal eye test he would have not given me glass .he said there is just a minute power in right eye alone and some minute residual power would be there even after Lasik ( he told that normal).
When my DGCA class one arrived 3 months later. My DGCA class one medical says “HAS MET PRESCRIBED MEDICAL STANDARDS. Below this there is a limitations section –this section in blank. Below this that is a section call recommendation. In which 3 codes are given. The explanation for these codes were given at the back.
.33- to exercise the privileges of the glasses with corrective Glasses
.82 – Advised carriage spare set of spectacles while flying
.174- All Review at IAM/AFCME

I have 4 questions
1. I stay in chennai ,India. There is a Airforce base here that does in the renewal of class 1 medical(Senior Medical Officer,Air Force Station,Tambaram,Chennai 600046) . Can do my class 1 renewal here or should I go only to an IAM Bangalore / DELHI AFCME centre.?
2. Does the word review mean renewal?
3. As I have said earlier I have done lasik already . But still the dgca class 1 doctor has prescribed specs for me. When I go for an interview with an airline would I be looked at in a different way for this? That is even though I do better than the other guys in the interview the fact that I have done a lasik am still wearing glasses ,( Right eye -0.5, left eye -6/6 ) is that going to weigh down heavily on me .
4. Are IAM and AFCME medical centers very strict compared to the civil medical centers like Apollo hospital?
Thanks a million for your time. Cheers

many airlines will not consider you for a pilot job if you have undergone any kind of laser eye surgery.e.g.korean air.
otherwise,at AFCME or IAM,it will be a case to case review.yes, they will be more stricter than apollo and yes,you will have to do all your medicals at del or blr.
good luck...it is common to get number back after lasik etc and usually it would be hypermetric number as time progresses as in a + number towards reading glasses req.

hawaijahaj.....minimum 6 months for your indian med after any eye surgery as far as I remember..good luck.

@Hawaijahaj...you may clear the DGCA medicals by doing LASIK but the bigger question is that if you will clear the company medicals! Think twice before you perform LASIK. My company for one does not accept LASIK! But then i dont work in India. There are quite a few airlines in the world that do not accept LASIK and yes do consult the DGCA medical doctor before going in for LASIK. (I don't mean class 2 doctors!) Remember once you have performed LASIK the scarring is permanent so choose wisely.
