It rains for 300 days out of 365 in kch
I've only been to KCH a couple of times (in XXRA each time)
but it looks to me the runway length's been extended. Used
to be about 2500m if I recall correctly.
Good nightstop though - plenty of "kuching" for everybody!
Funny one this one - not like the last AA runway excursion
at BKI a few years ago. Unstable 25 VOR/DME approach?
But then I'm only guessing. Better to wait and see.
Any more info from any AA pilots? Looks like a landing on 07 and xxx rain reported so KCH not a great place in those conditions. Tailwind perhaps? Any info on the crew. Malaysian reg so KCH-based crew or KL? Expats or Malaysian? Aircraft look like it wont fly for a while.

Landing Rwy 25, in heavy rain, was told vis was down to 800m. Based on the marks, they went of the runway almost after touchdown towards the right side of the rwy. Got bogged down in mud, nose wheel broken and angled backwards. That could have been due to the mud, but heard they could have landed on the nose first( not very likely as A320 comes in at a higher AoA) but thats just a rumour at the moment. Not much details other than that, AA has good PR with the media, doubt we will hear any more from them.

Not going to theorise here but just a little food for thought. MAS operated to KCH for years using DHC6, F27, F50, B737 and A300B4 before the runway was extended as did SQ with the A310 and AAI with the B743 for Hajj operations. All of the above's safety records were pretty good. Statistically based on number of years of operation versus number of flight to KCH MAS are light years ahead in the safety of operation. Throw in different aircraft types operated and well you don't need to be a rocket scientist to see the numbers.

Hi operated into KCH from 1989 in DHC6, F-50, G-450 and B747. By far landing the 747 in KCH was the most fun. As I remember it Always a CB somewhere on finals or over santubong. Had an escape route procedure for 25 TKOF. Winds can be tricky and windshear is available on both approaches when CB's are the source of precipitation.

a few incidents to dimly remember KCH by:
- MAS a330 that veered off the runway while backtracking
- MAS 734 that had a near disaster
- 733/732 doing the mail run for pos laju that broke or was written off after landing.

Hey don`t forget Camels high and fast touchdown with a miraculous 180 on A300B4 at the end of runway! Famous foot print was there quite a while for all to witness. Ofcourse he was the super duper Safety Capt. those years.
AA had the same thing in BKI few years back with that LAT cartoon B737 where few MAS B737 landed in front of it. Pilot skill/error might be an issue but the company operation style is more worrying, always pushing for time, always go orientated, Anyone can fly!
Nevertheless, it is the passengers' choice that will change the course of this rot!

what about the MH737 that stalled in Kuantan during approach in 2010? the F50 incident in tawau back in the late nineties? the incident in SZB in the eighties or nineties?

Gents, what's important is learning something from this incident to prevent it from happening again in future(not only to AK, but to all operators and pilots in malaysia, asia, worldwide)....

Pilot - the final filter
In any case, what ever the situation (except something beyond human capability, such as broken wing or tail) it is the PIC's decision and responsibility. If it's windshear, delay the approach or go-around. If the visibility is the problem (due to heavy downpour), don't land. Pilots always blame the weather,etc; except him/herself for an incident/accident?

You have heard numerous time from passengers or publics saying or passing remarks that why Airasia can land and MAS cannot land? True enough we should not be blaming the flt crew when anything incidents happened as it can happen to anyone.
I feel it is more of the flying culture within the company that put them in a higher risk group.

One afternoon at a Far Eastern port, I delayed departure for 30 minutes in deference to thunderstorms and reported winshear. For approach: if there is a CB: wait! Hold! ( I did it last week again ) Some others go! Bad decision!
Some say it could happen to anibody: yes and no...Avoid! It' s in the procedures! It will mostly happen to the ones that go instead of waiting a bit...
