One afternoon at a Far Eastern port, I delayed departure for 30 minutes in deference to thunderstorms and reported winshear. I was in the First Class cabin, when a Chinese carrier pushed back from the adjacent stand. One of the passengers, a well-heeled Chinese businessman, asked me why our commercial rival could take off while we couldn't.
I told him that the other capatain was not responsible for his life, but I was. He thanked me and shook my hand.
