atpcliff,

some of those payscales you listed are atrocious! I was getting paid nearly the same to fly a C210 around Africa!

54fighting,

Only if you are desperate consider EVA. Do not give up a descent job to work for these clowns. PY, Shine, & the 89A management group are the
"SCUM OF THE EARTH". Lies, deceit are common place. Be Forewarned.
STAY FAR FAR AWAY. ONLY THE DESPERATE SHOULD APPLY.
Even if only the desperate do apply, I bet they'll still have a nice big pile of applicants!

Hi!

Just heard from a guy that they will withhold pay from your check to build up money to cover training...you get it all back after two yours...it makes the net pay you get per month not very nice. I think I will stop applying after hearing this news.

Also: I hear guys saying how bad it is, BUT
Guys are saying the EXACT same thing about Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Fly Dubai, Cathay, Korean, etc., etc., etc. So, it sounds like EVERY job is horrible..what to do, where to try and go???

These jobs can't ALL be the worst job available!!!

Hi!

Yeah, the pay in the US is not very good, unless you're at the very top, like DAL or FedEx or SWA. That is one of the reasons there are so many expats from the US out there now. The US HAS had TONS of excess pilots, but the number is shrinking, shrinking, shrinking, and the expat recruiters are already feeling it.

The total number of US pilots has been going down steadily since at least 2000, the US military has less and less pilots, and finally the US airlines are now hiring:
Atlas, Southern, Evergreen, AirTran, Virgin USA, Allegient, JetBlue, Delta and more and more regionals are now hiring, and many are recalling furloughees for the first time in a while...then the end of 2012 the retirees start again: The US raised the age from 60 to 65, so we are in a 5 year period of transition where virtually no one has retired for 3 1/2 years.

I am expat, and I was offered an interview to fly as a Q400 First Officer for a regional: $19,000 per year. Typically, you can NOT get a DEC job in the US. If you can get one, it is at a company that is not very popular, and the pay is low... right now there are 0 DEC jobs in the US.

Now that the first screening has ended this week is there anyone out there who can take the time to fill us all in on the details?

How many people came out there and how many were offered the job? What did they have you do out there?
Any other important information?

Thanks!

going to TPE next week, not comin from Alitalia, so calm down everybody

its a 6 days long screening and medical evalutaion

someone said its hard, someone said it is not,

i'll tell you in a few, but for now, to me, considering the fact that i might end

my life (still 37 years to go on the spot) flyin the maddog with overall stick

time of less then 2 hrs, EVA is attractive, tell me whatever u want, but i am

deeply sure that its a good compromise!!!

see ya!!!!

Hi!

When the job first opened up, EVA DID have it on their website, even though all the hiring I heard of was through the contract agency. After a week or so, the EVA site did not show the job, but the contractor is still looking for guys.

Good luck!

Only work in Taiwan if your going to gain a type rating. Get the type and then start shopping around for a place to work where you will have a future. There is very little chance of promotion to the LHS in Taiwan. If you work here too long, its not the end of the world but you will miss opportunities. They should not be hiring expats, they should protect their own jobs. But the rank and file pilots don't have solidarity, and they are cowards to stand up to management. Management is enduringly foolish. They save a penny today to lose a dollar tomorrow. They don't have the business sense. So begrudgingly locals work with the expats. If your an FO, be prepared to be the little doggy along for the ride. You will help them with the english language when flying to N America or Europe. Be prepared to work your ass off studying... you will need to memorize alot of stupid stuff that in a normal airline is considered trivia. You will be oral tested at each check and on your line checks. Important operational stuff... that is secondary! If its the same as when I was there, you will fly 2-3 long hauls, 2 medium and about 4-5 short. You will be on the roster for 18 days on average. Your pay will not be very much about 5-7k/month, and they will take 20% in tax. There is no provident fund, no alowance for housing, no allowance for kids in school etc. If you stay to long, your buddy who paid their dues as FO on the Q400 back home in the great US of A, will be a 320 Capt or better earning a good wage and living very happily, where you will be a 747 FO and trying to figure out where to go to finally get your LHS... (Middle East). So you will find yourself in the ME or at Cathay. They are your only options unless you decided to go back down to the Q400 again and start over. (that has happened many times!). They will tell you that they treat everyone equally, but its not true! Dont listen to the lies. You will be 1 hour away from downtown Taipei...so forget about a life. You will be close to the airport where there is nothing. See it as it should be seen... and end to a means.. the TYPE rating...and then get out! But the question should be asked.... why go here when there are sooo many better opportunities out there ...especially if you have a type rating. I know eveyone complains, but believe me this is one of the worst. Good luck. Hope that helps!

Hi!

Thank you for your post...it was full of excellent details.

Turkish is hiring rated Capts and FOs. China is hiring a lot of Airbus capts.

Fair skies to you!

Sorry to hear it Starskate. If it helps, I think it would be a mistake for you to go there anyway. I worked in these people for a few years and then moved on. To tell you the truth, it was the worst 3 years of my career. Dont lose any sleep over it. You mention they are strict... lol... yes to the point of being foolish. To them, its more important to memorize how many seconds you have to a TCAS RA than it is to actually do the maneuver properly. I could not stand the idiocy anymore. And don't think because they remember all the no.s that they have it all figured out! I once got a lashing because I did not remember the "formula" for calculating climb gradient. Instead, I do miles per min ie 6076(1sm)x%xmiles per min in the climb for 2nd segment. They didn't care that I was able to get a more accurate no..they wanted the damn formula! The problem was that they could not figure out what i was talking about! Sheeeeeesh! And so many more cases like that... i just shook my head most of the time. So... i had enough. Biggest bunch of fools operating AC in the world in my opinion. i watched them crucify an expat over small stuff, but then i did alot of stand in sim for other captains doing checks...and they would let them do stuff over and over until they get it right. One local capt, (who had all the nos down) but could not figure out that when an engine fails (on approach)you have to select the other power lever to mct. He kept going to TOGA and thence into a go around! He must have done it 4 times. Then they walk around all serious thinking they are gods gift to aviation. There is no professionalism and jovial comraderie. It is quite simply a bitch of a place to work.

Don't be a part of it. I know that everyone is complaining about every company, but i have been at a few, and believe me...its much better most other places. MUCH Better! Consider it a practice run and keep looking. In hindsight, i would rather step down into a smaller airplane than go back there again. I would even go back to school first! I think that job took a few years of my life. On the plus side, Taipei was pretty cool at times...but you wont see it much considering you will be working 20 days a month and wickedly lagged the other 10, and an hours drive from town. Oh...and they rule by fear. They hang the carrot for you...and screw you in the end. Good luck to you and anyone considering Taiwan. Its not worth the piddly money they are paying... get a type rating stay for 1-2 years and get out.

if this or any other company is not worth a cent for then one shouldn't be taking a free type rating from any airline. Have some moral ground and basic principles, moreover there are plenty of type rating schools out there and by all means PAY FOR YOURSELF.

The job may not be the best but tell me where is the best place out there?

For heavens sake Etops grab a brain and read the post. I am not advocating going and stealing type ratings from everywhere. I am saying that the abuse starts with working for the Chinese companies and if they are going to treat you like dirt, then don't feel bad about leaving! However if you like it...then stay. Perhaps you are unaware of the borderline racism that goes there. If Taiwan pilots don't like expats in their ranks then they should not hire them. But then they dont have the strength and solidarity to stand together. It makes me sick.
Tell me...did you pay for your type rating? I doubt it. Please take your moral high ground and preach it in Taiwan. That is where the corruption and dissent starts.
