Garuda Crew Smoking During Flight !!!

Garuda Crew Smoking During Flight !!!
My wife & I recently flew business class on GA707 on the 7Th of August from Sydney to Denpasar on Garuda.
The flight was all pretty good, except for one thing - with business class in the A330 almost empty, the pilots and a senior cabin crew member took the opportunity numerous times during the flight to have a smoke in the dunny !!!!!
It's been many years since I flew Garuda, and except for this my flight was excellent - better and cheaper than Qantas business (which wasn't even available on this sector anyways).
Is this sort of thing common on Garuda - it clearly gets my mind working on what else could be going on behind the scenes ?????????

Might well you ask...........I have worked for a number of Asian Carriers and it is S.O.P.for smoking crew to do so at any time in the Cockpit.......Dont forget the Capt....oooops sorrry..COMMANDER is GOD and your job would be on the line if the Capt(read F/O) was to complain.
Air Safety in Asia is paid nothing more than LIP SERVICE as a generalization.Europe I have found does not have this problem........something to do with respect of all stations; no tribalism;no Caste. And if that is hard to swallow, I boarded my beast yesterday to find 2 cigarette butts in the Jump Seat "ashtray"....conclusion?
Mister Boeing.....please remove all ASHTRAYS from the Alluminium as I have had it pasted on me.......but SIR ashtrays are provided.

OK so the general thing is that this is the norm - I thought it might be, and hence my question here.
In it's inflight magazine (yes I read it - it's a long flight.......) Garuda mad a lot of talk about wanting to imrpove it's name as a brand.
Perhaps they might take a look at this thread and see that part of attaining a great brand is looking after the finer points like the whole crew smoking in flight thing ????????????????
Seriously the flight was great as well as it's affordable business class - my only comment is that being woken up by the CREW smoking in flight detracted somewhat.
Still, Garuda are selling the only direct business class seats between Australia and Bali, so I am likely to be a return customer !!!!!

That why they draw the curtains between the cattle class and the business class..
and deny the use of the business class toilets during flight...clever.
Thats why they have the really good reclining seats (cradle) in C fare ...so you could don the smoking jacket and puff away in comfort..chaps
But if you don;t behave yourself in Garuda, you might get poison in your OJ.

Unfortunately the majority of Indonesians are heavy smokers (Garuda Pilots included).Indonesian DGAC (equivalent CAO's) states in a nutshell that smoking on the flight deck is permissable so long as certain activities such as refuelling are not being carried out...Garuda's SOP states that the PIC determines whether or not the flightdeck is a non smoking one or a smoking one (so if you were a non smoking F/O you would have to put up with it!! ).....i think a previous poster alluded to the fact that PIC=GOD in SE Asia.
I reckon you should write to them and explain that GOD's second hand smoke eventually gets to the C class cabin...

Same on South Asian carriers such as Air India Express. Constant stream on smoke coming through the A/C system, and when you complain the CC tell you it can;t be smoke as it's a non-smoking flight

I once walked onto a Malaysian B747-400 flightdeck to be greated by 3 heavily smoking pilots, with the smoke sitting...oh about eye level in a thick band just below the overhead console switches.
I sat down in the clear air and had a great chat though.

Happydriver, smoking on GA flight deck has now moved to "by unanimous consent" of both pilots. There are captains who refused to allow the F/O to smoke, and F/Os who refused to allow the captains to smoke. Throw the PIC is GOD mentality out of the window, those types are no longer welcomed here. No "dirty tricks" on the non-smoking F/O by the captain for insisting to smoke.

Flew a BAC 1-11 in the U.K for an operator who sadly no longer exists, it was the norm for most to either smoke a pipe or cigarette on the flight deck. Always very polite and asked if I minded.Can't see anything wrong with it. From memory the 1-11 had a cigar lighter to the left of the gear handle?

US hysteria
20 years ago most of flights were smoker ones. The current situation is due to the US hysteria of non smoking everywhere. As most of marketing men and managers want to keep their US passengers, slowly all the flights became " Non smoking"
Good for the out flow valves which request less frequent cleaning, bad for some asian passengers used to smoke a lot, not used to fly and....go in the toilets for smoking, then triggering the alarm.
We have flown during half a century with passengers smoking on board, the most dangerous is to put the butt in the bin of the toilet and it is what are doing some old passengers not used to fly in our asian area. Thanks to the US hysteria!
(Personnally I am a non smoker since 40 years, but I am tolerant and accept smokers at the condition it remains at a reasonable level)

The safety of not smoking on board is irrelevant now, the comfort of all us non smokers putting up with the constant barrage of someone elses addicition is!!!!
NO SMOKIN all the way! Ban it everywhere indoors!!!

Things have changed for the better, thank God. I remember flying with flight deck crew either smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipe. Too bad for the non smoking crew member.
