And the overshoot isn't much fun either.
They also have a "Checkerboard" similar to Kai Tak, however when I was there it had slipped down the mountain in a monsoon storm. Fortunately I did not see it and try to use it.
There is a great sense of satisfaction when safely on the ground and the wheels are chocked, just need to change the underwear.

Well if you guys think that is a "scary" approach don't leave home without your mummy.
Compared to the "airports" that many pilots face daily in places like South America, African highlands, Papua New Guinea, Alaska, NZ, etc that place is a joke!
Nicely sealed and marked runway, bugger all slope too. Oooohhhhhhh I'm soooooo scared!

OK may be Warhawk was a little hasty in his reply, but I have to agree with him about other runways being a lot harder than this particular example.
Experience of course will help and may be this approach was quite daunting to a newbie. Anyway we've all been down this road and still flying safely

I'm in Thailand at the moment. I've just tried the link in the first post and it's been blocked by the Thai Ministry of Information!!

Looks nearly as much fun as Kathmandu RW 02 on a dark/hazy/stormy day with a circle to land 20 as well for the FUN OF IT ALL.
Miss the flying in "retirement" but seem to be buisier???? with part time Sim work

While I agree that the tone of reply from "warhawk" was not required. I must admit that this appears to be far from a dangerous or difficult runway by any "bush" pilot's standard.
What a beautiful location though! I bet the DHC7 crews must enjoy the trip...

Tioman Island is a challenge, because the approach is a descending turn directly onto short finals, the pic in the original posting is taken as the aircraft levelled out, the problem lies in a a mountain slope on the approach side that comes right down to the runway edge, as can be seen in Astina's post the undershoot is very inhospitable and the overshoot doesn't exist.
Some of the so-called difficult approaches on this thread and the parallel thread in "Private Flying" forum have the benefit of an undershoot and an overshoot, these don't exist at Tioman, hence the relief when you chock the aircraft.
But its a 900 metre tar strip, should be a doddle, what also adds to the tension is the descent over the sea coming from the mainland, you get get this all wrong and you start swimming.

Limited go around and a curved approach. Interesting but really not that special. Little slope and as you say a longish sealed runway down at sea level. No go around or undershoot defines most one way hill strips, which in many cases have steep slopes, uneven and slippery grass or dirt surfaces and high altitude to boot.
Maybe surprising to the inexperienced or the usual airline pilot but I' afraid it doesn't rate as a difficult strip, merely a small airport with some restrictions. By the stds of many places its a nice one.
