This Section is written to help people who want to get into the Cathay Pacific Cadet Pilot Programme.
As of 2005, here is a list of the "Hurdles" the a candidate must go through.

Est. Pass combined rate of the above 2 items is ~ 1/6
Second Stage Interview
The second stage Interview and test consists of a full day at CX city.
30min Computer based Numeracy Test
This is a typical numeracy test where you are given 11 sets of data and 3 question to answer. You will be given a question booklet , pencil and paper and will select the correct answer out of a possilbe 16 on the computer.
45min Computer based Psychological Test
You will be asked 187 questions on the screen. Answer yes/not sure/no
45min written technical Quiz
60 min Group Excersie
4 candidates will be given a set of data each, and will be required to work together inorder to select best solution. The general layout will be like this.

...Eliminate the non-sulutions.
...Select the best remaining one.
Answer a few questions about the whole excercise.
90min Flight Planning exercise conducted with another cadidtate.
60min Generals interview with technical component.

60 min Interview with a members of Management and a senior Pilot.
Est. Pass rate for the full 60 week cadet course in Australia is over 90%)
FAQ on the cadet selection process
Q: What do they ask in the interviews ?
A: Its pointless knowing what they ask becuase the questions change every time. Knowing what they ask will just make you think up the "model answer" and I belive that the flight crew recruitment people are very good at what they do. They can "read you like a book".
Q: Whats the best way to prepare for the interviews ?
A: Know yourself better and be who you are.
Q: Whats the most common mistake candidates make?
A: IMO the most common mistake is that many candidates have no clue of what they are getting into. This show up in the interview and you have 3 of them to pass.
Q: What are the eye sight standards ?
A: Correctable to 20/20 vision. no colour blindness.
Q: How I am so sure of the details.
A: I aren't, the above represents a best guess.

KA Cadet Selection Details
KA Selection details. Details from knowledgeable sources have indicated that the KA process looks like the following.
KA Stage 1(Initial Medical Checkup)
You will be invited to attend a brief medical check up which tests, weight/height and eyesight at a medical practice in Central.
Standards expected:
The candidate has healthy BMI.
Vision that can be corrected to 20/20.
You have normal Color Vision.
KA Stage 2(Computer Pilot Appitude test)
You will be invited to play some computer games in KA house with the joystick. Tasks include:
Keep the cursor in the center.
Quick maths questions, is 924 - 4 = 920 true?
Keep check of the pattern etc etc.
Do all 3 above at the same time.
This test is much harder than the Cathay Pacific one.
KA Stage 3 (1st Interview)
KA Stage 4 (2nd Interview + Numeracy + Group Exercise)
KA Stage 5 (Flight grading)
Question 1: What are the vision requirements ?
From previous discussion in the forums, It is generally thought that requires that a cadet's vision be correctable to 20/20. Eyeglasses are allowed.
Corrective eye surgery is however not recommended.
CX is belived to require normal color preception. Color vision for CX is belived to be measured with the Ishihara Test for color blindness. Examples here.

Question 2: CX cadet program Hong Kong Residence Requirements. What is a Hong Kong permanent residents?
The above means that that the applicant must have a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card. In order to quailfy for one you must meet the requirements set by the Imigration services Department of the HKSAR. Details here.

Thanks for the heads up. One more thing if you help me with, Stage 2 interview....what type of computer numeracy is it????. Are there any types of books I could use to prepare, for the test. My math is kind of weak right now.

I am not sure about the current status of hiring at Cathay at the moment...Some have said that all hiring has stopped. Others say abit is still going on.
Lets take a look at the situatation. Currently, it is extimated that cathay is loosing ~US$3 million a day.
Any competent corprate officer would probably take action to reduce cash outflow ASAP as it is unlikely that any the passenger numbers are going to pick up soon.
Therefore, it would be safe to say that high-budget expenses like flying you in for an interview or sending you down under for flight grading would be called off.
As for people who have been hired but yet to report for duty?
I don't know what will happen to them.
One thing for sure, if the drop off does not statbilize by the end of may. The corprate officers would probabaly take additional cost cutting measures.

Unfortunately, there is no hiring as of this moment. Those who have been signed as direct entry are doing their courses now, but there are no more new hires that will be going through the system as of May.
As for the cadet courses, there have been a few candidates which have gone as far as the second interview phase. But there will be no courses starting this year anymore, if you're looking at putting in your resume in, you're likely to be waiting till next year.

According to Cathay's website, under job search in the careers section, they are still hiring cadets.
They are doing cadet interviews in the end of June and July, but still haven't yet confirmed. Because SARS in HK has already peaked with fewer new cases, it is highly probably that interviews will commence then.

You can still apply, and why not? If you can get an interview in, you'll probably be put into the pool of possible qualified cadets, and you'll probably be put in priority as to when you'll get called again for more interviews. However, flight grading has been put on hold for now, so the furthest you'll get at this stage is probably the second interview.
If you get a package, do reply. There is nothing to lose in this matter.
But again, there is no course for this year, the next one most likely will begin in March 2004. There is already a backlog of DE and current cadets who will probably be in a waiting list when they get back to HK.
In fact, the last batch of DE's are in their conversion course now. The rest of the May crop will most likely be sent home for 3 to 6 months, at least until the airline recovers to sustainable capacity figures.
So don't get discouraged if CX does not call you back. It may be that things are not where they're supposed to be for more new hires at this moment.

the most recent posting on the cathay website for cadet recruitment was on march 19th (i.e before sars). There is also a seperate window that pops up to tell you that hiring has been frozen.

Any job postings in the Cathay's career website meant that they are still hiring for those positions. If not, they would have taken it off by now.

Just to clear it all up so you don't get your hopes up;
1. NO hiring whatsoever
2. Those cadets due to grad this summer are NOT being offered positions in the company, but are first priority after rebound.
3. DO send your stuff and get on file.
4. DON'T expect a reply until rebound.
That should put ALL hiring questions to bed.

Okay, there is a difference between accepting resumes, and actual hiring.
You can send in your resumes, and I'm sure Flight Recruitment will be happy to accept them, simply because it will enlarge the pool of candidates that they can select from.
So go ahead, ahks, send in your resume. But don't expect an interview anytime soon.
