Where to live?

Just a quick one, with regards to where one is allowed to live when based in HK. Obviously, the more centra you are, the more expensive rent becomes.

Is it possible to live in Macau, for example? It's a short ferry ride, from what I can see, or a bit of a drive, but given the schedule, would be achievable.

Thanks in advance...

I wouldn't recommend it.. You need to go through customs at both ends which can cause delays. There would be cheaper places to live in Kowloon and then you can make use of that wonderful invention, the MTR

Macau - a bit of a drive? That's an understement! At a guess with two border crossings and Chinese traffic, about 6 to 8 hours I guess. And you passport would be full in about three months! You would also need a dual registered car (very expensive) and a Chinese driving licence (hard to get).

There is a ferry that goes to Macau from the airport, but it's only available for those with through tickets, so crew reporting for duty can't use it. I do know people who commute by the Macau ferry to central, but they're not pliots. And it would cost you $280 dollars each way. Not convenient for our job.

Live on Lantau.

Most pilots live in either Tung Chung or on the south part of the Island, cheung sha, tong fuk, mui wo etc. SENTENCE DELETED BY POSTER TO AVOID MISINTERPRETATION

The airport is close and there is a good aviation community out here. It's easy to make airline friends and the living standard is high.

Hey Michael Egerton - could you give us a little more details about the scam you mentioned and how it is pushing prices up??

Also, one thing to consider could be the routes of the airport buses...it woudn't be so bad to jump on a bus to/from Cathay City...I am sure living somewhere less central along the bus routes might be an option...there are tons of routes...all airport buses start with A or E followed by 2 digits.

It's a widely known "enterprise" that is perfectly legal, yet does upset many local pilots and Lantau residents. You can find out more details by browsing the Fragrant Harbour forum.

Scam?

Yes Michael,

I'd love to hear more about this so called Housing scam? You probably should be careful spreading lies. The aviation community on Lantau isn't quite as large as you put it but we do look out for each other.

Of course, and "scam" is an overstatement hence the correction I made above. There's nothing wrong in looking out for each other. Other people on Lantau might see it a different way. I just mentioned it because some people are a bit sensitive about how a company's employees use their housing allowance.

That is not my own opinion though. Apologies for using those words carelessly. I was just trying to recommend one of the better places to live to someone who is currently outside Hong Kong

Sorry guys, I was very careless there.
