Flight grading
Can i ask what does the flight grading consist of?
Am i right in saying that even if you pass all the stages of the cx cadet pilot selection process that it doesnt confirm your acceptence to the course?
You have to pass the FG in adelaide? and what does it assess you on?

They are looking to see if you can be taught to fly at a descent rate. As you may have no flying experience they do not expect you to be able to fly a plane but they should see improvement throughout the grading process.

Flight grading
Previous posts are correct, you will be placed in to one of three catagories depending on your flying background.
Less than 10 hours - basic flight grader - 7 flights on the Grob
10 hours to 15 hours - intermediate flight grader - flights on the Grob and the CAP10, very lucky!
More than 15 hours - advance grader - 3 flights on the Grob and 3 flight sims on a turboprop
You will be given a detailed checklist for all your flights. This will show you what you will be assessed on so you basically know exactly what each lesson will consist of. There will be a series of mass group briefing given by school flight instructors which will cover all you need to know in advance of each flight. They will answer all your questions.
The basic flight program for basic graders goes something like,
Flight 1 - Maintaining straight and level flying
Flight 2 - Turns, Climbing and descending
Flight 3/4 Steep turns, stalls/wingover/unusual altitude recovery
Flight 5 - Take off/Circuit training but no landing
Flight 6 -Circuits - fly rectangular tracks around the runway - take off/landing
Flight 7 - Assessed on everything!
You are given feedback after each flight so you know exactly how you are doing.
There is also a simple diagrammatic reasoning test and a computer flying exercise (fly through a series of hoops). Both are normally done at the beginning of the 2 weeks in Adelaide. You will receive clear instructions on the day as to what you need to do so don't worry too much about trying to find more information on these tests.
Loads of very nice cadets around to help from Cathay /Dragonair / Emirates/ Qantas and other from China and Japan.
I have heard that that a recent batch of flight graders all made it, 10 out of 10, where as half the previous batch made it. The good thing at this stage is that you are are working together and no longer competing, so help each other out and enjoy the experience.

I'm catching up on this thread as I'm checking out what awaits me if I am successfull in the earlier stages of the selection. I'd like to know more about the different categories of flight grading: Momogai mentions in his post that there are 3 categories for people below 10, 15 or above 15 hours. On the other hand the FTA website mentions that there are only 2 different categories: basic for <20hours and advanced for anything above. Could any of the people who did the flight grading recently comment on which is the current setting?
I have been flying for a year and a half now, and I currently have a total of 15 hours. I am concerned that if I was to make it to the flight grading I would be assigned to the advanced course. My concern is that my flying was spread over long periods (less than one flight per month) so my level may not be as good as somebody who flew on a more regular schedule. Do you know if the recency of the flying hours is taken into account when assigning people into the different categories? Surely my level in a few months (I should be at around 20 hours) wouldn't be comparable to a PPL holder with dozens of hours. How are these edge cases handled by FTA?

My understanding is that there is/was an "intermediate" grading level...but practically speaking, I don't think its been used recently.
Not to worry, IF you make it all the way through, they look at how you got your hours (all bunched up, recent...etc etc) before deciding which group to put u in

Hey All,
Just curious about one thing -- I already have a PPL (current total flight hours is 80) but it's been a few years (almost 4) since I last few (due to $$$ issues
) so I'm naturally going to be a bit rusty. What grading would I put in with this scenario?

They take into account the total number of hours but also how recent each of those hours were logged.
If you make it through to flight grading, they will ask you to fill in a table so that they have this information before selecting which grading category you will be put into.
