Hey will83, I'm also scheduled for my stage 2 interview in Jan. I assume it's the Jan 10th one. All they've said is that I've past stage 1 and stage 2 will take place in Jan, details to follow later. Maybe it's cos I had my stage 1 way back in Oct and Nov.

Anyways, I'm from Van too.....well.....kind of.....hehe.

Just to add another dimension to will's interview debrief, I got asked slightly different questions, especially on the technical side:

Technical:

Do you know the four forces acting on an airplane in flight?

How do airplanes stay in the air?

What European destinations does CX fly to?

What types of airplanes does CX fly?

Personal:

Why do you want to be a pilot?

Are you applying to KA's cadet pilot program as well?

What other jobs have you applied to?

I got the impression that they will keep asking technical questions until you don't know the answer, and see how you handle it. You don't want to guess answers to technical questions, one of the interviewers is a pilot and he/she WILL know when ur guessing.

Two interviewers, a pilot and a HR manager, usually Belinda. The pilot asked most the questions, with Belinda throwing in a few at the end.

Some additional notes on stage one tests:

Presentation:

They haven\'t changed the subject in years. The CX website is an obvious place to start, but it\'s worth doing some additional research to really show ur keen. keep to the time limit, and try not to use any notes. Us native English speakers have a real advantage here, so expliot it!! Only one person (usually Belinda) will be present, and she was only half listening (no eye contact, making notes on ur file)!! So don\'t be freaked out by the unfriendly atmosphere. I think the presentation is just to make sure ur halfway decent in conversational English.

Listening Test

Thick Brit accent, been covered before. Try listening to web-broadcasts from bbc.co.uk to get an idea.

Grammar Test

Not a big prob for anyone from Van I hope!

Aptitude Test

Similar to those IQ tests where there are four graphics and you have to pick the one that doesn\'t match the others. Watch the time! Skip one if still have figured it out after a while. I didn\'t finish, had to guess the last few.

Eye-hand Coordination

5 \'computer games\'

1- Track L-R movements of dot on screen using joystick

2- Time based mathes test. format: 384 -43 = 351 Yes/No? 30 questions

3- Friend/foe identification. Outline of aircraft flashes briefly and you have to decide whether it\'s a friend of foe (difference in wingspan by a few pixels)

4- Similar to (1) but with horizontal axis controlled by foot pedals and vertical axis controlled by joystick. Difficult!!

5- Landing simulator. This was the most complex and most fun!!! You get five approaches, you have to line up the aircraft with the runway while reducing speed and altitute, and have to watch fuel level as well. Controls: joystick, foot pedal, throttle (+/-)

Hope this helps!! Good luck

awtleung,

this post seems to hv some examples for the apt test. I haven't looked at them, so I dunno if they're any use. You see, I only found out about this site AFTER I did stage one.......how I ever got through, I will never know.....

will,

Calculators are not allowed in the DESO/DEFO mathes tests, I haven't had any luck getting info on the cadet tests.

Thumbs up General question about CPP interview

Hey guys,

How you all doing? just have a very simple yet complicated situation here.

I am currently studying a Diploma is Aviation, and got accepted by CPP for an interview (2nd chance already).
However, due to a personal problem, I wouldn't be able to finish my diploma before the CPP interview date which is on the upcoming January. I requested to postpone my interview to a later date. Just wondering whether this could really screw up my image as a potential CX applicant, would CX prefer myself to finish my study n head back for interview, or heading back ASAP?
cheers to all !! Thx heaps guys!!

How far are you being done on your Aviation Diploma? 1/2 year? 1 year? 2 years?
If you're really close to finish your diploma, why not finish it off? It's good for yourself, knowledge, perhaps, maybe future career.

However, if you've just started it, why not go for the CPP.
Just my opinion, if you can get in to CPP, who cares about your diploma anymore?

What do you mean by (2nd chance)???

Good Luck!!

I agree. Study the tech stuff and get some sim time. I studdied a lot, got all the books, bought some sime time (ouch$$), and studied some more. I liked the interview process. Unlike some airlines, the job is yours to lose. It is my belief that they want to hire you and give you lots of time to prove yourself. I liked the 2 days instead of 1 hour. Lots of things to evaluate instead of letting you tell some silly story about how you "saved the day in an RJ". I much rather answer technical questions than tell a story of when 2 crewmembers didnt get along! Anyway, good luck.

Wil: Thank you very much for your help, best of luck to you for the remainder of the interviews.

energie & harry:
I've registered onto harry's designated page, but I am having trouble replying to your message. I am fine with both meeting days. it's up to you guys. Juz let me know and maybe post a message on this thread so whoever wants to join can just come.

I had no idea that we'll need to answer techinical questions, it was not stated on the interview outline that any technical questions will be asked. Now I am getting ReALLY nervous.

Do you guys think that the info available on the CX webpage is enough for our presentation? I briefly searched other pages but couldn't find much concerning our topic. Where did you guys do your research? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Please keep me up to date as to where and when are are meeting. Thank you!

Hagen

ishikawa: thank you ! Appreciate the help and good luck on your 2nd interview. Hopefully a few of us will get through the first and will be asking you for info on stage 2 and on..

Awt: Will be more than happy to meet you when I get back to HK. however, I wont be in HK until Jan 6th, so the earliest I could meet up is 7th.

i did my research through books & aviation magazines, online websites, and ask some of my friends who are pilots

i think on the website is somewhat enough but of course you should do a little more in-depth research

my presentation very close to 4 minutes

Sonic Cat,

well basically I only got around 2more months left for my diploma, that's why i really wanna finish it first before I move on to CX. Just that not knowing what would CX think about my decision of not goin to interview straight away. 2nd chance as in this is already my 2nd application followed by the failure of my interview last year.

cheers

Still waiting...

Hi guys... I'm just came back to HK from Toronto a few months ago, and is in the selection process for CX CPP right now as well. I've had my stage 1 interview late november, and I've called them for an update today regarding the status, and they told me they're still reviewing my file and isn't ready to comment on it yet. So... fingers still crossed

Anyways, I agree that we (those of us who are in HK, and those of you who will be back) should get together somewhere/sometime and share our stories/experience/insight, and generally to socialize

So... lets organize something

Waiting,
~T~

Very true, we really should get together for I'll probabaly need a few study buddies incase I pass stage 1.

For the few of us in Vancouver, when are we meeting and where?? both days are fine with me so you guys can decide. kay?

Harry: thanks for giving me the heads up for that book youre talking about.

I was juz told by a friend that Cathay specified a book for us to read... I went thru the webpage and did not come across anything that mentioned any books for Cadet's to read. ... anyone else heard something like that?? is there a specific preparation book we should be reading?
Thanks!

I was told by the HR lady that after I pass stage 1, there will be study material provided to me. I am guessing this is the book you are talking about.

They will mail you the book after they told you you've passed stage 1. I'm not sure if the book is available (elsewhere) publically tho.

CX Interview book

Fortunately, I do have a copy(ies) of this CX book. This book covers very basics about the theory of flight, and general knowledge of flying, ie: Met, Engine, etc...
For those who are interesting this book, it'll cost you $100 USD + shipping. PM me.

Same here. .I dont even have a mailing address in HK.. and the time frame between stage 1 and stage 2 is only 2 weeks... within that time, they have to select the candidates, mail out the book, and expect you to study it?? isn't that time frame a little tight..?

for all the British Columbians: so have we decided where and when to meet yet?
