CX "I CAN FlY"

Have anyone heard of the "I CAN FLY" program held by CX? targeted at HK youth age 13 to 18. Over 1000 participants, can you believe it?
Members would receive general ground school knowledge, get a chance to tour Cathay city, experience CX flight SIM, visit HK international airport control tower, etc. I heard CX even select a few outstanding members to go to BAE for flight training as well...

(gosh I'm jealous)

Here is the link to Cathay Pacific "I CAN FLY" info page
http://www.cathaypacific.com/hk/abou...9842%2C00.html

Think they have a forum too for those of you who understand Chinese.

Question:
-- considering more and more people in hk are gaining interest in the avaition industry.. and that a good number of them had received CX "I CAN FLY" training... would you say oversea PILOT WANNABE would have a smaller chance of getting into the cadet program in the future?

-- do you think this sudden "interest" in the industry is contributed by the TVB series and by CX's excellent marketing... is it a "trend"...?? do you think these people are going to continue to be interested in aviation?

CX "I Can fly"

Hi,

Yes, you are right, it is also one of their marketing strategy to promote their service. Cathay wanted to be more involve more with the communicty, promote corportate relation to the public and trying to be socially responsible.

I wouldn't worry about it too much in terms of the chances of local and overseas applicants for future recruitments. And besides, HK has always been a excellent place to start a trend, and then quiet down after a few years. I could be wrong, but thats how trends work especially with rescent TVB series as well as the Japanese TV show.

Take care

hey flyingmoggy,

i'm NOT here to start up another WAR regarding your comments, but what you just posted was such a crude comment that nobody could STAND IT. you ever thought about who are the general target (PUBLIC) of this particular forum?, let me tell you, its not just oversea students, but as well the locals. i guarantee you this, your post will sadden a lot readers AND DO EXPECT MOMENTOUS REPLIES.( you deserve them anyways)

i really do hope that u take the opportunity to apologize before this escalate to another level.

Personally, I think the "points" are somehow justified (English standard). Just the way of presentation.

hmm not being rude or anything but the standard of english in HK is much lower than needed for the cadet programme i think.

i was born in HK but basically grew up in australia so english isn't much of a problem for me, but while i was in HK i visited a university and the standard of english was rather poor

since you have to go through a listening test and grammar test in the first stage of interview for CP i doubt most will make it through, the listening test is way too fast for them to catch...and then theres the personal interview o_O;
Two points to note:

(1) "english isn't much of a problem for me" vs "the standard of english was rather poor"

That will simply outstand his level of English, and step down Hongkonger's.

(2) i doubt most will make it through

This is judgmental - hinting he's the best. But when one keeps in mind that "you being bad doesn't mean I am good", things will be easier.

Writing objectively needs skills - avoid I, you those pronouns and names etc.... Avoid starting the sentence with I, You...etc but with the issue, the english standard is not so good in hk....etc...

BUT if the purpose of the message is to show off, then fxck off. and the most appropriate consequence is the failure in the 1st interview despite good English.

p.s.: I am a totally locally educated guy. How come I can teach english to someone in an English-speaking country?? doubtful.....

hey hey u gotta remember ::Joey::1985620 is asking if it would decrease his chance, i'm just trying to encourage him, sorry if it didn't sound that way

exactly as u say i come from an english speaking country, to say that english standards in HK meets ppl in UK, US, or AU would insult them, its like asking will chinese level ever be the same in AU even though many schools offer it as a subject? technicle english is taught in english class, but much more is learnt through other subjects and communication. ppl on the streets of HK don't talk in english a lot which is normal since english isn't their first language

while i was flying i've heard some other pilot request melbourne radar to repeat himself 4 times because he couldn't understand, in the end the radar guy even had to spell some words out for him, believe me the radar guys don't talk very friendly when u ask him to repeat a few times he will ask questions like "do you have a hearing problem can you understand me?" and hearing something like that in air is more discouraging, its harsh its fast, but 1 minute of indecision or not following tower radar instructions could lead to many deaths

as for discouraging, i didn't intend it, let me put an example, if you said to a football team "you'll win next time", that simple comment has a negative connotation implying the other team will lose next time but it wouldn't be intended, all i'm saying to ::Joey::1985620 is don't be discouraged, being overseas does have some advantages

"The main purpose of the interview is not to see how well you speak english, but to get an idea of who you really are."
thats true but only as far as the candidate being able to reply fluently to questions promted, after all the profession of pilots is an english only occupation.

Thanks for your comments people... guess i've been worrying too much...

It's really interesting to see my post turning into a war AGAIN...
but i have to admit... FlyingMoggy2 is not as ... and ... as last time

Honestly, not everyone in hk has horrible english skills... i actually know a couple that speak perfect english... but really, try not to stereotype people.

HA HA HA, looks like I just missed out on another fight here. Well, as usual, chill out everyone!!

Anyway, just wanna post my thoughts here about this original topic.
First of all, I am really jealous about youngster being abale to go to this "I can fly", obviously cos im not "young" enough to make it in.
To be honest, I do think that the TV show sure have their effects, so it is a bad news for all da wanna be (including myself) but a good news to the airlines, because the aim of the TV show is to get more people into this field i believe. (hehe that's y Cathay n TVB joint for the production of this show).

Just a question to Joey, are you studying at uni now or wat?
Remember, it doesn't do u any harm, if you send CX an letter n apply for it. As I had mentioned in my past posts, i was bak in HK for interview early this yr, didn't make it....but so, at least i got wat i wanted, is some interview experience. surely i was upset bout not making it in (hehe...people who are from CX in here, can consider taking me in again LOL HAHA ) well, I personally believe in "wat u give is wat u'd get" so, as long as I work, soon or later I'll be where i wanna be, well hope so hehe.

cheers guys....and girls~~

yes K3nnyboy, I'm actually a second year art student at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, working to get my degree in industrial design. So... i would probably apply to the cadet program in 2008. I really wanna fly back to hk and get some interview experience as well... but timing is just too tight for me.. Aviation and Design are my passion... it's hard to pick one.

I also believe in
"wat u give is wat u'd get"
our efforts would pay off someday.

Moggy:
i was bak in Hk during April this yr, only made it into the stage 1 interview, and got a letter posted to me about not making it for the 2nd. i am planning to apply again end of next yr, as soon as i finish my aviation diploma, which i hope would do me goods.

Joey:

this is just my personal idea, if i was in your position, I'd apply for the cadetship ASAP, cos to me 2008 just seems pretty long way.

I think i kind of understand your situation, may be you want to earn more qualification before u actually apply. geez...looks like u are kind of struggle with what you really wanna do, Design or Aviation, well you can help designing planes LOL.....I guess this your idea would be much clear by the time you finish your degree. Sorry i missed the point that you doing ur 2nd yrs already, so might as well just finish it, at least you get more qualification this way.

Well, if anyone wanna share ideas, pls do so...cos we all here to learn with each others.

cheers!
