It wasn't put there for fun or as an inconvenience to the pilot. It was put there as apparently that is the place where it receives minimal magnetic interference from wiring harnesses.

We have a Garmin 796 that is now hard mounted above the dash in our 206. RAM mounts are all fine and well until they let go and the GPS falls down and breaks the chin bubble. Lesson learned!

It is specifically a transmission limitation, nothing to do with the engine. The part that wears out is the sun gear. Repeated 'hard' use will make sure it doesn't get anywhere close to TBO.
