No the pencil is not obsolete, it still does very good rubbings. It's not sketching I know, but I still get to use a pencil & the structures blokes still ask for them.

It may not be synthetic, but we use aluminium checker plate. Doesn't ball or drip. Does tend to dribble over 500 degrees, but transfers heat fast enough to make it difficult to achieve this...
