Cruising heights UK vs Australia

In Feb we flew a 737-800 between Brisbane and Sydney. IIRC about a 1.40 flight - cruise at 43,000. Here (starting in UK) on similar legs on similar a/c we don't seem to top 24,000 - why's that?

Navigation Lights

This just occurred to me as I saw a jet airliner pass overhead in the dark. The Green and Red Nav lights were clearly visible as it approached, but not after it passed over - then all I could see...
