I second Lavdumper's comments about SouthWest and why they are so successful, even at budget pricing. I fly SW several times a month, and the key is in the customer-facing staff. For their prices, I'll put up with just about anything, up to the wings falling off the a/c, so long as someone explains to me what's happening and why. Their attitude to their passengers is consistently better than any of the "majors", and Mr Kelleher has obviously a) figured out how important that is and b) figured out that it costs virtually nothing to provide.

Budget airlines such as Ryanair and such like, really do not care if a problem causes you to complain. It simply comes down to this, that a substabtial proportion of passengers will never complain, no matter how bad the service they get. Passengers such as this are the lifeblood of budget airlines in the UK and ireland. You could slap these passengers on the face with dead fish and ask questions suggestive of doubtful parentage, and they still would not complain - because they are told they are getting a 'bargain'.
This is why when you complain to ryanair, they really couldn't give a flying f*ck, as they really don't want passngers who complain, they want the ones who keep coming back for more, no matter how bad it is. At the end of the day, cr@p service is cr@p service regardless of cost.
As long as their are enough passengers prepared to put up with it, nothing will change.
I strongly disagree with the ludicrous notion that the likes of stelios and mol are the passengers champion. They are simply businessmen who have found a good way to make a large profit. I think some people really do see stelios et.al. as the mother theresas of airline transport. People who believe that they do it for their concern that passengers pay too much to travel really have swallowed the marketing pitch 'hook line and sinker'. I don't have anything against these airlines, but please don't believe the hype. They are in it to make a profit, that's all. And they don't want whingers. It's a sound marketing philosophy in a lot of industries.
