I think the over-riding factor is whether you can hold a Class 1 medical or not.

Some companies ask for an unrestricted class one though.

Which could potentially discriminate against disabled pilots. I think the companies who do this are wrong, unless the restriction prevents the pilot from operating (such as an as or with qualified co-pilot restriction in a single crew outfit).

Does this mean BA are losing experienced Pilots? I thought BA got all its candidates from Cadet Scholarships and SO entry programs? Maybe Im wrong. Asking for allready typed people with experience lends to think otherwise.

Sheep Guts BA are losing experienced pilots....140 odd pilots retired last year....In the last 10 yrs, close to 1000 pilots have retired from BA. That is a lot of experience to lose.

Oh how times have changed. It wasn't all that long ago that BA were putting comments in their pilot ad's (and insinuating) along the lines of "you will be highly self motivated and driven to push yourself to a near nervous breakdown". Oh how the mighty now have to eat humble pie, or maybe it is just that HR have finally received the feedback that the old type of BS is now transparent and it is time to try a new approach, "let's get chummy", how's that for buzz speak jargon ?

The job isn't what it once was and there are a lot of us out there who are "highly motivated" and "driven" to go and do something rather more fulfilling than some of this cr@p.

IMHO - but what do I know, I'm just a dog, and the British won't even let me hunt foxes anymore. Crazy world.

Positive discrimination

Bit sad when all they can rely on is "being positive about disabled people"
That reminds me of when I applied for a job as a civvie (RAF reservist) flying Dominies for navigator training.

According tothe equal opportunities questionaire that I had to submit with the main application, under the Civil Service Equal Opportunites rules and regulations I was "guaranteed an interview" if I was "registered disabled".

So, if blind and limbless I was GUARANTEED an interview for a job as a pilot! Lunacy!

Last autumn BA requirements were 'either a B747-400 or B777 type rating with a valid ATPL and at least 500hrs recent experience on type OR a valid ATPL, 2000hrs total time with at least 1000hrs on Jet Transport with MTOM of 25 tonnes or more OR a valid ATPL, 2000hrs time with at least 1000hrs on Multi Crew turboprop or Military equivalent with MTOM of greater than 50 tonnes.'

I know of several very experienced pilots, civilian and military, who have been turned away on minor points due to the inflexibility of the BA recruiting system. The company's doing itself no favours and it's not surprising that the minimum requirements are dropping.

I agree with the post above.
Frankly it's hilarious that BA have had to reduce their requirements, from that of type rated 777 A320 or 744 rated guys - now to simply consider anyone with an ATPL.

Picture it - the recruiting office 9 months ago with some HR guys and a few pompous , arrogant BA mgt pilots sat round a table. They thought the doors to Meadowbank/Cranebank would be beaten down with type rated applicants. After all - they are the "worlds finest airline".

What actually happened?

Many prospective applicants spoke to guys in BA and found that it has little to recommend it. They discovered that the bidline system gives senior guys lifestyle and choices but at your ( junior) expense . Well, the mgt pilots managed to piss off a few applicants who did turn up for interviews ( see other pprune threads ) . Others rightly saw that We offer unparalleled long-term career opportunities really means you will sit in the right hand seat for 35 years. Many applicants quickly figured that even the pay was no better than other carriers. To be honest when you factor the time to command the pay is 30% less than other carriers.

It's one thing that BA pilot management have destroyed the working environment with persistent and deleterious changes over the past 7 years. What makes me laugh, is that they are so insulated and so removed from the real world, that this has come as quite a shock to them; - that they have had to bin their stipulation for type rated pilots.

Wake up and smell the coffee, as they say!!!

I hear that last year they had as many as 100 people they had offered jobs to had then turned them down. One of my ex first officers joined them this year but was determined to get into Virgin instead. I heard last week that he has now had an offer from Virgin, and has resigned from BA. Good lad!

sfbbus - clean your ears out. The recent recruitment drive only started in the middle of last year and so far less than 100 contracts have been sent out - the first courses began in January. 3 new DEPs have, however, resigned from their courses!

It certainly is a shame when the only positive recruitment issue is roster stability!

It would appear that BA's problem is the ridiculous selection process, that alone is enough to put most off. If that doesn't then the "blind line" system will probably do the trick!
