The South Island also has some excellent green forests and rolling hills. Can't go to NZ and not visit the West Coast and Fiordland in the South Island (which is close to the Alps, too).

I'm guessing their is good training up near Auckland, since it's the biggest city, but it's not as nice up there, and it's full of JAFAs

Type rating

Thanks for all your replies folks, very helpful.

Mongoose237, I know that there is no point taking the type rating knowledge test and LST in NZ as it wouldnt be valid in the UK (if I could even do it). What I was thinking was that I could do the flying part in NZ, then return to the UK and go straight into the LST and knowledge test. Could that work?

TK, am planning to get some snowboarding in while I am over there, probably in Wanaka/Queenstown area

self fly hire in NZ

Planning on being in NZ in Jan 07 for a holiday and would like to hire a R44 for a few days. I'm low hours although hope to have completed CPL(H) by then.
I've tried a search on Google but haven't come up with much of use. Would be grateful if someone could point me towards operators on either North or South island where I could hire.
Thanks

SI OPERATORS

Nelson Aviation College, Nelson Helicopters, Garden City Helicopters, Christchurch Helicopters, Wanaka Helicopters

Not sure of NI operators. If you're looking to get P in C hours, you're probably going to be out of luck as most places will only allow you to go dual. But if that's not an issue, rip into it and have a ball.

What about the training costs in NZ? Is it any better than in Canada or indeed any other part of the world?

training costs

On another thread, Zeefly says training in RSA is only 115 pounds per hour (depends on exchange rate).
What are rates in NZ and Canada these days?

Training Prices

From what I have heard is that unless you spend a few grand on a R22 syndicate share it will cost you $400-500 an hour when with a syndicate share it cuts the cost a fair bit with hourly hireage being around $190-220 an hour it is something to look at and something I may consider in the near future but I am still working out the pros and cons of it all.

Question Training in New Zealand, heliflight or Helipro?

Hi, I have spent hours looking through the posts on all these forums and have absorbed loads of information about helicopter training in New Zealand. I have come across what seems to be the 2 largest reputable schools, HeliFlight and HeliPro. I have noticed a lot of discussion on the forums and on other places on the net but a lot of the information is outdated. I would really appreciate if anyone has any recent information that might help me decide which company would be better to help me get through to a NZ CPL(H) and then eventually back to the UK with the cheapest/most useful/interesting/worthwhile experience!
If ive missed a recent threat on this subject then i apologise but please direct me there!

Heliflight or helipro.....or maybe even Harvey Helicopters... hmmmm

Cheers in advance

David

Bruce Harvery seems to get a lot of praise from people on here and I certainally cant ignore that. However, he seems to be always busy doing other things and what attracted me to HeliFlight and HeliPro was the thought of being able to gain experience as crew on commercial operations. I thought, maybe naively, that this might be useful experience and may even help lead to employment.
I'd love to have people's opinions on this...
