If you look at the introduction to chapter 2, ADM in the FAA’s Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge you’ll find the statement:

“The importance of learning and understanding effective ADM skills cannot be overemphasized."

Get out the smelling salts. Call it a skill if it's so important to you but the five thousand hour pilot doesn't necessarily have any better judgement or skill than the low hour flight instructor that spends a lot of time at the airport. Nice try to lead me away with semantics from your original contention that pattern work is not real world flying. I'd like to put an end to that nonsense once and for all. Not only do you have to make good decisions, you have to teach someone while doing it.

I am check airman for our company and can tell you that the pilots who are former CFI “circuit queens” can actually fly an approach and departure to the Standards set by the FAA in the PTS, (practical test standards), and can actually perform an autorotation without “mentoring”. Those that were not “circuit queens” require “training to proficiency” each year.

So,...the guys who built their time doing takeoffs, landings, and autos, are better at doing, takeoffs, landings, and autos?
